Dinner Bells Lyrics
This is the song that got me hooked on Wolf Parade.
Despite whatever it's supposed to be about, I've always related it to my estranged relationship with my mom. Something about it just really makes me think of her & everything we've been through.
Anyway, it's a beautiful song.
you should probably read the pitchfork interview, you guys are absolutely right on that. the two people in the band who write the songs grew up in the outsides. one in british columbia, another one in vancouver I think. anyway, it's about that and also Spencer's mom dying (no more dinnerbells?) which were two main forces in writing the album. there's alot of meaning in these lyrics, I hope no one looks at it and says "whatever it means nothing, its just catchy" cause it really isnt, it's more than that.
Sofia -- that was stupid. Shut up. Whether or not it offends your oh-so-delicate sensibilities, believe it or not, many people's mothers made them dinner. Moreso than their fathers, even! It's a sick, sick world we live in, I know.
"there will be no more winter there will be no more spring and there will be no more dinner bells left for you to ring"
following with the apparent theme of modernism presented in some of the other tracks, I see this as possibly being related to global warming perhaps, or the potential for the end of human civilization maybe? No more winter/spring suggests global warming will put an end to this, and also "there will be no more dinner bells" possibly suggests the end of man and thus his artifacts along with him, no more people to ring the bells. No one to clap hands, etc.
Plus, "I've heard all your treasons, I've heard all your pleas", could correspond to politicans and their attempt to justify that pollution is necessary (their treason) and their "pleas" to justify polluting as a necessary act for economic reasons.
you're the one-eyed feather you're the lion's mane
methinks.
Peacock feather
There's a sweet sadness, a meloncholy reminiscence that's at the core of this song. The writer is in the process of change, and thinking that things simply won't be the same any more. We do not now the circumstances. After all, this is not a story-song, and one great purpose a song can serve is to apply to many people in many places. So it's talking about change and the emotions around it in metaphors.
imho the wolf parade-album has some of the best lyrics i've heard in last year. there's a lot of meaning in these songs and the emotion they're presented with (both on record and in concert) is quite overwhelming. this is a perfect ending for a record (although it's the second last song) because of the sense of finality, but although there's a lot of melancholy in this song, i think it's not meant entirely in a negative way. things are changing and although it's a fucking drag to go through, things are changing for the better.
There won't be anymore dinner bells because there will be no more dinner! Addresses the global warming and death. Places blame on the US and other Western nations for the destruction of the environment.
eleanor rr, you're right on with that.
At the end of this song they play the harmonica, an instrument representing folk music and the pastoral, saying he wish nature was the way it used to be, back in the day
