So Cold In Ireland Lyrics

Here is a story
Of hope and of glory.
He's eighteen years old
And well I fell in love.
But after that,
Where have you gone, from me?
The one that I loved endlessly.

We used to have a life,
But now it's all gone.

Mystify...

Does it have to be so cold in Ireland?
Does it have to be so cold in Ireland, for me?
Are they ready for me?

Where have you gone, from me?
The one that I loved endlessly.
We were to have a child.
Yesterday's gone.
Well I knew the time would come.
When I'd have to leave.
Go on.
Look what they've done to me.
They've taken my hand...
And it's killing me.
Killing me, killing me, killing me!

Does it have to be so cold in Ireland?
Does it have to be so cold in Ireland, for me?
Are they ready for me?

But I'm afraid I'm returning to Ireland.
I'm afraid I'm returning to Ireland.
I see, that there is nothing for me.
There is nothing for me.

This is a beautiful, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL song. Why it's not on any album, I can't imagine. When I heard it, I got the feeling I'd heard it before...wonder why. Anyway, this is my favorite of all the songs added in the "Complete Sessions" albums. It's just that good.

@didiercollard When I first heard it I thought I was an early version of "Zombie." The Bass sounds just like it.

This song appeared as a bonus track on at least some versions of No Need To Argue in Australia.

I have two theories as to what it might be about.

The first is that it is a lament for the Troubles in Northern Ireland. A story of a woman whose young lover is killed in some sort of sectarian strife.

The other is that it is about a woman who has to leave Ireland to obtain and abortion. I'm not sure what the current state of the law is, but I recall several years ago there was a lot of discussion about abortion being illegal in Ireland, and Irish girls travelling to England or further afield for abortions. I think there was talk of Dutch medics setting up a ship off the Irish coast to provide the procedure.

It's quite possible that neither of these is correct, but either one could be.

@karma sutured It's the first. From Dolores O'riordan mouth.
