Queen of Hearts Lyrics

He puts the gun to her head
She tells him everything
Her voice is haunted like a dream
He sews the crack in his heart
Before he tears her apart
In the basement underneath
He says,

Never say no to me

He burns her high school pictures
And buries old dreams
He reads her diary once more
He cleans the tears from her eyes
He still can't stand to see her cry
Her face is broken and sore
He says,

Never say no to me

This song parallels the Queen Of Hearts in Alice In Wonderland whose favorite personal motto seemed to be "Never Say No To Me." Anyone who denies the Queen is quick to receive a death sentence, i.e. a gun to the head.

Also interesting is Under The Stairs, reference to a basement. Since the guitarist writes all of the lyrics, I'm sure there are some personal connections going on that cross-reference themselves through the songs.

Also notice in the song Happy Birthday, the first line of the song: Stick it in the back of her head; another line with connotation to a gun.

Back in 2002, TBM had a photoshoot where Chibi actually mirrored the Queen's favorite line of "Off with their heads" by decapitating herself when the band was surrounded by all of this Alice imagery. A bloody Alice actually used to be their logo after they changed their name to The Birthday Massacre from Imagica.

I could go on and on and on....

I agree with most of your comment, but wouldn't stick it in the back of her head be reffering to a knife or something? idk, seems like you would put a gun to someone's head and shoot the bullet in, whereas you would stick a sharp object in.

Sounds to me like a guy who had a crush on a girl most of his life, and one day decides that he would rather have her for one night and kill her than never have her at all.

“He puts the gun to her head She tells him everything”

When she’s at gunpoint, she doesn’t hesitate to tell him whatever he wants to hear, like “I love you.”

“He sews the crack in his heart Before he tears her apart In the basement underneath”

He still loves and cares about her, but he knows he can never let her go after all he’s done now–she would never speak to him again. So he clears his mind and heart and kills her even though he doesn’t want to hurt her.

“He burns her high school pictures And buries old dreams He reads her diary once more”

He gets rid of everything that makes her real to him, photos of her and any dreams of a family with her he once had. He has to forget about her completely or she will haunt him forever.

“He cleans the tears from her eyes He still can’t stand to see her cry”

He still loves her and it is hard for him to do what he is doing, but he must.

My Interpretation

I love this song, it sounds so beautiful!

It seems to me to be about a guy who couldn't get the girl that he wanted("never say no to me") so he kidnapped her and killed her in his basment("tears her apart/In the basement underneath").

To me, it sounds like he wants to have her, so he rapes and kills her.

I think he had a crush on her in high school, but she never had feelings back, and now he wants to feel better about being rejected and rapes her. ("He burns her high school pictures. And buries old dreams." "He sews the crack in his heart. Before he tears her apart.") And, "Never say no to me." she is telling him to stop. And after he has raped her he regrets it. ("He cleans the tears from her eyes. He still can't stand to see her cry.")

i love this song. it makes me wants to cry. :') the lyrics are wonderful. so is chibi's voice and the music. it's so ethereal and soft sounding, until you listen close and hear the words... most of my favorite songs by TBM are the ones where they tell a story. this song is kind of old, but its definitely among my favorites.
