As with a lot of their stuff, this song is a parody of a musical. In this case, it's a parody of the musical Rent.
This pretty much summed up the plot of Rent.
Omigod, seriously, I was laughing so hard because of how much it seriously sounds like Rent. They got EVERYTHING down. The little parts where they talk all dramatic, the tones and ranges, omigod, it sounds exactly like Rent! I was cracking up so much. I annoyed so many people at school today singing this song...
