Sweet Potato Lyrics
She cooks you sweet potato
You don't like aubergines
She knows to boil the kettle
When you hum bars from Grease
She senses you are lonely
But still she can't be sure
And so she stands and waits
Anticipating your thoughts
How can she become the psychic
That she longs to be to understand you
How can she become the psychic
That she longs to be to understand you
He brushes thoroughly
He know she likes fresh breath
He rushes to the station
He waits atop the steps
He's brought with him a Mars bar
She will not buy Nestle
And later he'll perform
A love-lorn serenade, a trade
How can he become the psychic
That he longs to be to understand you
How can he become the psychic
That he longs to be to understand you
So give her information to help her fill her holes
Give an ounce of power so he does not feel controlled
Help her to acknowledge the pain that you are in
Give to him a glimpse of that beneath your skin
Now my inner dialogue is heaving with detest
I am a martyr and a victim
And I need to be caressed
I hate that you negate me
I'm a ghost at beck and call
I'm falling and placating
Berate myself for staying:
I'm a fool, I'm a fool
He greets his stranger meekly a thing that she accepts
She sees him waiting often with chocolate on the steps
He senses she is lonely, she's glad they finally met
They take each other's hands, walk into the sunset...
You don't like aubergines
She knows to boil the kettle
When you hum bars from Grease

Okay, I think the first few verses are about two different people in different relationships, but both going through similar situations in their respective ones. "You" is the object of their relationships, the ones they are trying desperately to please and understand and build a deep bond with, but to no avail.
The fifth verse looks like advice to the "you"s to help the relationships progress along the paths that the subjects (he/she) want. The sixth verse is the penultimate frustration of the subjects in their respective relationships. They both desire a deep emotional connection and have been trying to get there for so long but their partners are not as into them, or not looking for the same thing, or are just plain clueless.
So during their detrimental relationships, I guess they've had similar schedules at the train station. She's seen him for a while, waiting with chocolate bars for his partner, etc. As fate would have it, they've both recently had the courage to leave their seemingly identical strained pasts, and meet each other. And well, this song strongly implies that they're made for each other, so there's that.

This song is awesome. In fact, her whole album is great. One of the best ever made, in my opinion. Anyway, about the song: it's lovely 'cause it's about a couple and expressing your love by being thoughtful and knowing the little things about the one you love. :)
I agree with you.She does have an addicting voice, kinda like Fiona Apple?
I love this song, but the second chorus is wrong here. It should be 'he' instead of 'she', because now the song is speaking from his point of view.
when she starts talking in the "I" form as in the sixth verse, does she talk on behalf of the man and the woman together, or is she (singer) talking about something else.
and is the last verse in fact the beginning of the story? or is it the beginning of a new story/relationship?
I think youre right about the last verse being the beginning of the story. I love this song, too. :)
There is a missing line in the lyrics. In the end, she sais "Do you like sweet potato?". In my opinion, she sings about her ideal love story.
It's so sweet about the little things you learn about someone and the things you do that show how you love them. Such a good album.
