I believe you got it backwards there steph. I think it's about the woman/girl dying. He is there with her as she begins to pass on, and she is crying and he doubts his beliefs, but thinks that God must exist and love him if he allowed him time with someone he loved so much.

The line "Will you find me when the tide decides that I got to leave", is about how he wants her to find him when it's his turn to pass on. He wants to join her in the afterlife.

The brilliant metaphor is setup that sailing is dying (as far as im concerned). She sails off, leaving him on the beach, and when the tide decides that he has to leave, he wants her to find him.

well no one ahs posted on this great song yet, but i saw john perform this one at madison square garden and he dedicated it to his kids...great great song

This song is simply beautiful (and yes I'm a self-confessed FFF fan). I believe John is writing about a younger woman whom he loves and addresses as 'Kid', but this woman is on the verge of dying, i.e. "The Captain's Calling...come to see you back where we belong" which he probably believes to be heaven, or a better place. As he stares into her dying eyes he sees 'bloodshot fire clouds' in her eyes, signifying her will to cling on to life. In his heart, he questions his beliefs, but admiring the beauty of the woman he loves, he infers that God is in love with him to have graciously given him this woman whom he can love. Througout this time, his heart is breaking at the thought of losing her, and yet in his heart he hopes that there'll be some place better for the both of them. "Something inside me is breaking. Something inside says there’s somewhere better than this…".

I agree with lionelfishes. It must be about the death of a loved one. Although its got some sort of haunting melody to it, cause hearing it for the first time, you'd think it's a happy song.

are you sure captains calling means shes going to die?? i think they are going to be separated for some reason, "will you find me when the tide decides that i got to leave"

but death doesnt really make sense. i think hes talking about the future they could've had if things were different.

I don't think its the girl dying...I think it's him more so. Her blooshot eyes are from her crying. The reason I think its him dying are lines like this: "Will you find me when the tide decides that I got to leave" Like hes the one leaving to another place...and some others...hmm I could be wrong but thats just what I thought.

I atually agree with steph. I think hes dying hes older and hes talking aout about how hes dying hes leaving with the tide and the captai =n is bringing her back to the land of the living where she belongs.
