Chances are when said and done
Who'll be the lucky ones who make it all the way?
Though you say I could be your answer
Nothing lasts forever no matter how it feels today

Chances are we'll find a new equation
Chances roll away from me
Chances are all they hope to be

Don't get me wrong I'd never say never
'Cause though love can change the weather
No act of God can pull me away from you

I'm just a realistic man, a bottle filled with shells and sand
Afraid to love beyond what I can lose when it comes to you
And though I see us through, yeah

Chances are we'll find two destinations
Chances roll away from me
Still chances are more than expectations
The possibilities over me

It's a fight with two to one, lay your money on the sun
Until you crash what have you done, is there a better bet than love?
What you are is what you breathe, you gotta cry before you sing

Chances
Chances
Chances lost are hope's torn up pages
Maybe this time

Chances are we'll be the combination
Chances come and carry me
Chances are waiting to be taken, and I can see

Chances are the fascinations
Chances won't escape from me
Chances are only what we make them and all I need

General CommentFirst of all, though I'm not sure about what the lyrics *should* be, I'm pretty sure you're wrong in the bridge. For instance, I think the last line is "You gotta cry before you sing", instead of "You got a crowd then float you see". Also, I think earlier on it's "Don't get me wrong, I never say never".

As for meaning, to me it's about starting a new relationship with someone. Chances are it's not going to last, no matter how it feels at the beginning. I think it could be about whether or not a relationship is worth having when you're unsure of its outcome, but he seems to be saying that sometimes it's worth taking the chance.

Maybe a bit cheesy, but I like the song!

General Commentmeaning for me: one ream lost signifying the end of one journey & with a new dream, the beginning of another.

btw, for WWE viewers, this was HBK's HOF theme song.

General CommentOn his Five for Fighting website, Ondrasik puts it perfectly, "It's all about taking the swing–there's beauty in the scars."

To me, just that makes the song even more beautiful. He's a musical genius and I love his songs. I apply it to love as well and I think that's what he is mainly singing about but it also boils down to life in general. His quote explains it all.

    Love the new album!

General CommentThis song could have so many different meanings..Mikerobe's theory about it being about starting a new relationship is definitely insightful.
Originally, I thought it's just about life. There are so many things that are left to chance...
Big chances like, there's a chance you won't live to be 30; and then the small chances, like, There is a chance I'll, I dunno, suddenly decide to wear blue tomorrow.
There's so many chances in life, and so many different choices...

But the more I read the lyrics, and listen to the (awesome) song, The more I see the relationship thing...

    Anyways, Great Song!

General CommentI think the song is about not being afraid to try something new, and even if you think you'll fail, just think that there is always a chance that it will work out and you'll be successful, such as a relationship, "never say never". Life is full of choices and there is always a chance for success, but only if you take risks...

General CommentThis song to me is about a boy who is crazy about a girl.

In my opinion is that him and this girl who he loves deeply had a horrible breakup. Throughout the whole song its saying that he has chances to talk to other girls, but he can't get that one girl out of his mind.
He tries to tell this girl how he feels in this song.

but, this is what i think it means. i mean, i could be completely wrong haha, but it makes sense to me.

Song MeaningI tried to write how I interpreted the song and this is what I came up with:

“Chances are when said and done
    Who'll be the lucky ones,
Who make it all the way?
Though you say I could be your answer
    Nothing last forever
No matter how it feels today”

He is asking himself to be sensible. He knows that when it comes down to it there’s no way he could be one of the lucky ones. (Chances are, when said and done, who'll be the lucky ones…) And even if she says that he could be her answer he knows nothing will last forever. No matter how they feel about each other right now (“No matter how it feels today”).

"Chances are we'll find a new equation
    Chances roll away from me
Chances are all they hope to be"

And then he says that they’ll probably find a new “equation”, which means things will probably change. He doesn't dare take a chance, because he’s afraid of what'll happen and therefore the chances are slipping away from him.

"Don't get me wrong I’d never say never
Cause though love can't change the weather
No act of God could pull me away from you
    I'm just a realistic man
A bottle filled with shells and sand
Afraid to love beyond what I can lose
    When it comes to you
And though I'll see us through yeah"

But then he's trying to be reassuring by saying that he’d “never say never”, because he doesn’t know what will happen in the future. And even though love can’t solve everything (“love can’t change the weather”), no one (not even God) could take her away from him.
Still he can’t help but fear that he might lose her someday (“Afraid to love beyond what I can lose”), because he’s a realistic man and he knows that these things often happen. He knows that it doesn’t always last and that people go their separate ways. But he’s still willing “to see them through” which means he want it to last and he’ll fight for it.

"Chances are we'll find two destinations
    Chances roll away from me
Still chances are more than expectations
    The possibilities
    Over me"

Again he’s saying that they’ll probably find two separate destinations, which means they’ll have to leave each other. But there're still "possibilities", there's the possibility that it might work out.

"Eight to five, or two to one
Lay your money on the sun
Until you crash, what have you done?
Is there a better bet than love?
What you are is what you bring
You gotta cry before you sing
    Chances, chances"

And then he's saying that you can’t possibly know beforehand what is going to happen. You might “crash”, but you won’t know until you try. And he’s convinced that there is no better bet than love. So if he’s going to take chance, he’ll take a chance on love. Sure it will be painful, but “You gotta cry before you sing”.

"Chances lost are hopes torn out pages
    Maybe this time
Chances are we'll be the combination
    Chances come and carry me
Chances are waiting to be taken
    And I can see"

Now he is being hopeful and saying that maybe, just maybe they’ll be the “combination”. Maybe things will work out. “Chances are waiting to be taken” and he’s going to take a chance.

    "Chances are the fascination
    Chances won't escape from me
Chances are only what we make them
    And all I need"

He’s changed his attitude. He knows he won’t miss his chances anymore, because chances are “only what we make them” and it’s all he needs.

My InterpretationFirst of all, I just heard this song for the first time a few days ago, and immediately fell in love with it.
I think it's about a girl and a guy starting a new relationship.

"Chances are when said and done
Who will be the lucky ones
Who make it all the way?
Though you say I could be your answer
    Nothing lasts forever
No matter how it feels today"

Very few couples actually end up getting married and having their happy ever after. The girl is saying "well, you might be someone I could love forever" but he thinks things won't always stay the same, no matter how in love they seem right now.

"Chances are we'll find a new equation
    Chances run away from me
Chances are all they hope to be"

He think that, chances are, their relationship won't work out in the end. But "chances are all they hope to be" meaning that it could be that they stay together forever.

"Don't get me wrong I never say never
Cause though love can change the weather
No act of God can pull me away from you"

He's not going to say no to this girl because he really likes this girl. But love can't change the circumstances and nothing can keep him away from her.

    "I'm just a realistic man
A bottle filled with shells and sand
Afraid to look beyond what I can lose when it comes to you
And though I'll see us through yeah"

He's saying that he's simply being realistic about the chances of them staying together in a world of people getting their hopes up just to watch them fall. He doesn't want to get his hopes up just for their relationship to fail.

"Chances are we'll find two destinations
    Chances run away from me
Still chances are more than expectations
    And possibilities
    Over me"

Chances are that they'll split up and that they'll end up far away from each other. And that things likely won't turn out the way they're expected to.

"Eight to five or two to one
Lay your money on the sun
Until you crash what have you done?
Is there a better bet than love?
What you are is what you bring
You've got to cry before you sing"

He saying that love is a crazy bet, but what else is there on earth worth betting for? ("lay your money on the sun" as in it's almost certain that your money will burn up and leave you with nothing). Things have to be bad and uncertain before content and good.

    "Chances, chances
Chances lost are hopes torn up pages
    Maybe this time
Chances are we'll be the combination
    Chances come and carry me
Chances are waiting to be taken
    And I can see"

Chances that aren't taken are torn up pages in the story of your life that you don't know how they would have changed your life. Maybe this time, he'll take a chance and it'll be worth it. This chance is one he's willing to take.

    "Chances are the fascination
    Chances won't escape from me
Chances are only what we make them
    And all I need"

Taken a chance is something he has to do. Chances are only what you make them, and he has to take them because this girl is what he needs and wants.

General CommentIt seems like he's talking about two lovers that are being separated by something. To me this is college. In the beginning, he's wondering if they even have a chance to be one of the lucky couples who stay together even in college. He's kinda accepting the fact that they aren't gonna be like that, despite how they feel.

Next he's coming to grips with the fact that he really does love her and that, despite the odds, he's gonna try his hardest to keep them together. He's just being realistic and trying not to get his hopes up.

Then comes the separation and he's putting everything he's got into keeping their relationship going, cause if there's one thing to risk everything for, it's love. In order to see that though, you have to go through the pain that comes with the separation, to know what you're missing so you can cherish it more.

Finally, it's actually working and they're love is growing even more and he's beginning to see that the two of them were destined to be together, but if he had remained pessimistic like he was in the beginning and hadn't taken the chance to actually try to keep their love alive, the paradise they're now living wouldn't exist.

General Commenthere are the lyrics I heard:
Chances are, when said and done
    Who'll be the lucky ones
Who make it all the way
Though you say I could be your answer
    Nothing lasts forever
No matter how it feels today

Chances are, we'll find a new equation
    Chances run away from me
Chances are all they hope to be

Don't get me wrong, I never say never
'Cause though love can't change the weather,
No act of God could pull me away from you
I'm just a realistic man, a bottle filled with shells and sand
Afraid to love beyond what I can lose when it comes to you
And though I'll see us through, yeah

Chances are we'll find two destinations
    Chances run away from me
Still, chances are more than expectations and possibilities
    Over me

    8-5, or 2-1
Lay your money on the sun
Until you crash, what have you done?
Is there a better bet than love?
What you are is what you bring
You gotta cry before you see chances
    Chances

Chances lost our hopes, torn out pages
    Maybe this time,
Chances are we'll be the combination,
    Chances come and carry me
Chances are waiting 'till they take it,
    And I can see

    Chances are the fascination,
    Chances won't escape from me
Chances are only what we're living.
    And all I need.

It seem s that what he is trying to say is that there is always chance about everything and that things can go right or wrong. mikerobe007 seems right about the fact of starting a new relationship.
