The Surface of Me Lyrics

Oh Yeah!

A study of history
reveals an unflagging appeal to mystery
You talk about abstraction at the top of the list,
but you might as well get pissed
'Cause in me the essence does not exist
No!

You're so shallow
How can your romance hope to be the veil of
an ersatz human nature That can pacify
but never slept well
when there's the pretension of living a lie

[Chorus]
Take me as I am, judge me for my crimes
I can say I'll behave freely all the time
You can predict what I'll say,
it's in my DNA,
and soon I'll be a catalogue number anyway
So say a little prayer,
convince yourself that someone cares
All I am is what you see
There is nothing more than the surface of me [x2]
[/Chorus]

Oh yeah!

Apologies to Skinner,
but I do believe I feel like I'm a winner
Having just discovered a long-solved modal secret
of why I always feel
so god damn downtrodden and desperate

[Chorus x2]

What you see is the surface of me

I love this song. It reminds me of that Special Victims Unit episode, called Hate, which was a guy who blamed his DNA on his "uncontrollable need" to torture and kill Arabs. The defense was complete bullshit. Great song though, it's a bonus track on The Empire Strikes First.

If memory serves me right... it's only on either both the Japanese or European releases, or just one of those releases. I don't know. I've actually never heard this song: it wasn't on my copy.

And now... I am forced to eat my words; I love this song.

It seems to be about behaviorism. The Skinner I think he is referring to is the psychologist whose theories included "radical behaviorism" where a persons actions are predetermined.
