The Mansion Lyrics

There's no end, there's no glory, there's a slow resounding story.
There's no place to feel certain. There's no body waiting for me.
There's no stand of trees, no morning. There's a curve without a warning.
(No lamp, no sleepy hollow. There's no pack of dogs to follow.)
There is weird and lasting sadness. There's no large and lengthy warming.
(a hot expanse, a burning field.)
There's no heat. There's no expansion, there's no door into the mansion.
(no shield, no mask to wear)
Lengthy warming, sweet removal, sweet expanse, sweet and substantial.
There's no flesh. There's no fingers in my hair. I see a tunnel.
We built walls tall and solid between the treasure and the shovel.
I see on in. I see a fountain. There's a trail over the mountain.
There's no wayside, there's no stopping, and the peak is wide and rocky.
There's no ceiling in the mansion. There's no waste, no hesitation.
There's no crack of dawn, no morning. Just an everlasting warming.

I feel, even as an atheist, that this is a song about a perception of afterlife. I feel at the start that he's talking about how your life on earth was not very pleasant, then goes on to explain how great afterlife is. And that in this afterlife, nothing you knew from your life on earth applies anymore "there's no heat, there's no expansion", "No fingers in my hair", when he goes on to say "there's no ceiling in the mansion" I believe he is saying this afterlife is limitless. "No waste, no hesitation" meaning everything in this afterlife is good and you don't have to worry about a thing. The line "No crack of dawn, no morning, just an everlasting warming" once again shows that the stuff you knew on earth no longer applies and that the afterlife is an "everlasting warming", a good thing. Great song.

I find this song to be very depressing and beautiful. To me, it is about a place: The Mansion. It's a dark and desolate place... creepy, unsettling. "There's no door into the mansion..." makes me think they're trapped inside and no one can get to them. "A curve without a warning," "there's no wayside, there's no stopping, and the peak is wide and rocky" gives it an unsafe feeling. "We built walls, tall and solid between the treasure and the shovel." An impossible feeling. They'll never get the treasure. I want to go to this mansion... It sounds so much like places I've dreamed of. Feelings I've felt.

It's about depression (or anything related to it).

It is about life. Isolated life. Lonely life.

Trying to find a way into the mansion, yet this mansion is impossible to enter. Trying to stop and take a look at the view, yet there is nowhere to stop. There is now growing comfort, just weird and lasting sadness.

Life is a slow resounding story with no tangible end. A constant turn in the road without any warning. Sad. Empty.

it's about the perfect place that you perceive that you want to be, but it's so difficult to get there, try after try...and it's killing you.
