Ask DNA Lyrics
Gummed up, brain dead? Can't decide
You can't pray enough, you can't hide
You can be cool or you can cry
Do it wrong
Not it all
Or do it right
No one owes you, no one's to blame
Save for bad genes or DNA
Ask your conscience the why and how
Do it then
Do it when
But, do it now
What's up sweet cakes?
Who's hip anyway?
Earthgirls are easy
Whatcha gonna do, lil' buckaroo?
(Hey you, better ask her nice!)
All you gotta do, happy fool, is ask your mom
No we all can't be superfly GQPhdFBI
You can pretend and you can try
Move ahead
Lay down dead
Or slip on by
When the truth seems so far away
Buddha loves you and Jesus saves
You need answers for your dismay
Ask yourself
Ask your mom
Ask DNA
What's up sweet cakes?
Who's hip anyway?
Earthgirls are easy
Whatcha gonna do, lil' buckaroo?
(Hey you, better ask her nice!)
All you gotta do, happy fool, is ask your mom
C'mon c'mon c'mon ask your mamma
Supa-groova-mamma-Dahli Lama (X3)
What's up sweet cakes?
Who's hip anyway?
Earthgirls are easy
Whatcha wanna do, lil' buckaroo?
C'mon!
What's up sweet cakes?
Who's hip anyway?
Earthgirls are easy
So, whatcha gonna do, lil' buckaroo?
(Hey you, better ask her nice!)
All you gotta do, happy fool, is ask your mom
You can't pray enough, you can't hide
You can be cool or you can cry
Do it wrong

I think there's a few messages in here and they're all pretty general themes in life. It's mostly about having acceptance of the unchangable things in life and searching for answers.
"Gummed up, brain dead? Can't decide You can't pray enough, you can't hide You can be cool or you can cry Do it wrong Not [at] all Or do it right"
I think this verse is about accepting your flaws whether they be acquired (gummed/messed up) or inherited (brain dead/stupid) because in the end there's not much you can do to change the fundamental ones. You can pray as much as you want and they will remain. "You can be cool or you can cry" and they will remain. Then the last three lines are about living life (wrong, right or not at all) in acceptence of these flaws.
"No one owes you, no one's to blame Save for bad genes or DNA Ask your conscience the why and how Do it then Do it when But, do it now"
This verse is about how the study of DNA and the discovery of its role in our personalities/behaviours has alleviated responsibility for our actions ("No one owes you, no one's to blame Save for bad genes or DNA"). Then we're told that we should decide for ourselves whether or not DNA should grant any kind of absolution ("Ask your conscience the why and how"). The last three lines give urgency to this ("But, do it now").
"No we all can't be superfly GQPhdFBI You can pretend or you can try Move ahead Lay down dead Or slip on by"
This is another theme of acceptance. It's true: we can't all wear designer clothing or get PhDs or be in the FBI. We can all pretend to have/be these things and we can all also try to attain them. In the end there are three options though: you can strive to achieve ("move ahead"), you can give up ("lay down dead") or you can just cruise through life and not care("slip on by").
"When the truth seems so far away Buddha loves you and Jesus saves You need answers for your dismay Ask yourself Ask your mom Ask DNA"
This verse is about seeking answers to the big questions in life and having to sift through tons of opinions to find what resonates with you. We all seek the truth but it usually appears almost unattainable and we are bombarded with different religions, philosophies and schools of thought ("Buddha loves you and Jesus saves") all looking to fill the gaps in our lives. However, despite the seemingly impossible task of getting said answers we continue to seek them and look everywhere for them ("Ask yourself/Ask your mom/Ask DNA").
"What's up sweet cakes? Who's hip anyway? Earthgirls are easy Whatcha gonna do, lil' buckaroo? (Hey you, you better ask her nice!) All you gotta do, happy fool, is ask your mom"
The chorus is a little more difficult to decypher. I don't think any of it has anything to do with the other themes of the song apart from maybe the last line. The first five just have to do with the world of Cowboy Bebop I think. Are Earth girls easy in post-apocalyptic 2071? I don't know. The last line though is just an advisory one. Want answers? Ask your mum. Mother's are, for the most part, pretty smart ladies. Hey I just realised I'm posting this on Mother's Day. Happy Mother's Day all you mums out there! :)
i agree with you, but i think the chourus is about how everyone tries to fit in on this little blue ball, and how everyone, not just earthgirls, are so easy to convince what's stylish, and what the new fad is and there really is no such thing as "hip" or "cool". just my opinion.

I kinda think differently, for me this song is a kind of a joke, as it blames DNA for the all the flaws of our character, and how we transfer them on to our family, just like genes.
Weird, I always thought this song was about the futility of blaming others for your own mistakes and the various avenues people turn down to escape responsibility for their own actions and who they are. Or in some roundabout way the idea of someone's nature (ie DNA) vs what they learn from others (So what's nurtured, you could say).
Either way, the song seems to have the message of "stop making excuses and be who you want to be," or maybe "Don't overthink it, just be yourself"
The only thing that doesn't make much sense to me is "Earth girls are easy"...which to me just makes me think of that cheesy old Jeff Goldblum movie. If that's actually the reference I'm not sure what it would imply though.
Nonsense to the nth degree, with a happy, bouncy, poppy beat. Gotta love Yoko Kanno.
And the video of this (the opening to the Bebop Movie) is awesome.
Pretty sure this is about the 's' word and everyones' obsession with it. LOL @ Cowboy Bebop.
haha! what a sexy song. i think it's about a girl who's trying to determine something about her birth. what if she's adopted?? and also, evidently, she is being ridiculed by an alien. fascinating stuff. oh yoko kanno!
yesteryear: ...and also, evidently, she is being ridiculed by an alien.
Yep, the chorus sound like an alien talking to a girl, but the final line:
"All you gotta do, happy fool, is ask your mom"
is the girl who answer the question.
The lyric is by Tim Jensen.
