this song is amazing. I love the piano in the beginning, and yes, "I want to be someone who someone wants to be" is an AMAZING lyric. I got into Marillion because of my dad. Not many people here in the U.S. know who they are, which is quite a shame to me, but I guess I'm one lucky American to have a dad with good taste in music.
You know? Strikes me that this song was written and recorded as a love song, and a devotional song, shortly before Hogarth's wife of 20 or so years decided she wanted out. Saw him singing this in concert shortly after, and crying his way through it. Broke my heart...

Truly an amazing piece... possibly the best song on "Marbles" next to Ocean Cloud. Steve Rothery gives one hell of a solo in the middle. Brilliant!!!!!
this is one of my favourite songs ever, shame that i'm the first to write about it. at heart i think its a love song, told by someone in their mid or late stage of life. it makes use of a lot of peter pan imagery- (hooks- captain hook, tick tock- the alligator) and is about getting old and needing someone, and feeling useless without them.
There seems to be a lot of melancholy in this song. To me it refers to a couple, together for some time, perhaps one is going through a typical mid-life crisis, reminiscing about their past together (simplicity, adventure, fantacy, etc.) and the realisation of perhaps not having failed to leave a legacy behind...This is brillaint : "I want to be someone...Who someone would want to be". Make any sense?
As a BIG Marillion fan since a child (cheers Dad) I'd rate this one way up there. I'm really not keen on the 'I want to be someone, someone would want to be' line because it's self pitying and looking for approval from others, but the rest of the lyrics are haunting especially the echoing of certain words. - Wendy e, e, e, e, e, darling, ing, ing, ing, ing, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tock, etc.
When the lyric echoing/fade out kicks in at the same time as the instrumental climax....well....what can I say?
This is fenomenal. Does Marillion have more songs of this extreme quality? Wow, LOVE this song so much
