Katie Lyrics

Katie was a little girl who said "I'll find a way".
Katie was a little girl who said "it'll be ok".
Till one day she found a little bit of something she used to drown.
She said "I'm alive and I am free, but you see I have control over me."

But will you draw the line?
Turn a blind eye to all the faces that you know?
And she said, "go".

Katie was a little girl who never found the way.
Katie was a little girl who never was ok.
Cause one day she found a little bit of something she used to drown.
She said "I'm alive and I am free, but you see I have control over me."

But will you draw the line?
Turn a blind eye to all the faces that you know?
And she said, "go".

She said "I'm alive and I am free, but you see I have control over me"...

But will you draw the line?
Turn a blind eye to all the faces that you know?
And she said, "go".

And she said... "go".

I just think of it as a very metaphorical song. I don't think Katie is necessarily a "little girl," it seems to me like she's an adolescent and is referred to as a little girl because she feels and seems so small in the hugeness of life and the world. She's going through difficulties that are also so much bigger than her, and she says she'll find a way through without knowing how.

Then she finds some form of self-destructive behaviour. The first thing I thought of was drugs, but it could be alcohol, anorexia, depression - it doesn't really matter. She refuses to accept that it's a problem ("you see I have control over me" - her addiction isn't controlling her, in her eyes.)

And then it's asking, will you realize what you're doing and stop? There are people trying to help you and you won't accept it, won't get help ("turn a blind eye to all the faces that you know, and she said Go.")

Instead, she ignores the help being offered and sinks even deeper into the self-destructive patterns.

It's a really haunting song for me, because I've come so close.

This song really makes sense to me... It fits my life actually.

To me it means that there was a young girl who'd been hurt or abused (mentally or physically) but she never showed how sad she was. She faked happiness and showed a different face to everyone... a strong one, pretending that she could handle life. But then she found something she could control. Food. This control was seen by her as her only bit of freedom. She refused the help and felt alive, although she was still dying inside. In the end I believe Katie took her own life either by refusing the help and starving, or taking her life by pills because the wait for starvation was too long.

i always thought this song was about a mentally disabled young girl named Katie. People didn't think she was capable of controlling herself and her actions. So she drowned herself to show everyone she had control of herself.

It nearly made me cry the first time i heard it, & so i probably automatically think about the things that i've dealt with, especially as my name's Kate anyway. but i always thought of it as a girl who had an abusive childhood (physically or mentally) 'she was never okay, never found the way. but always had hope, and said she would be okay, even though she wasn't. when they said 'the little bit of something, & contorl over me; i always saw it as self harm. which could be anything from cutting to eating disorders to drug/alchohol abuse. its a beautifully sad song<3 xo

I think this is about coming out.

The line:

Turn a blind eye to all the faces that you know?

reminds me of my parents asking me how i could be so selfish, ruining their public image.

Then when she couldn't find a way, it makes me think of feeling like her life was ending because she discovers she's gay.

and when she talks about finding something shes drowned, well, anyone who's ever buried something 'shameful' about themselves will understand that

midget, I interpret it as Katie being a reformed alcoholic who starts drinking again. I don't know how accurate that is, but that's what I'm getting.

i'm thinking drug abuse or alcohol abuse also.... Shes young but has a crap upbringing and turns to drugs or alcohol to make the feelings go away... The line, where it says i am alive i am free... i believe is a reference to the drug she is taking makes her forget everything.... every one telling her to stop and that is where the line..... turn a blind eye to all the faces that you know... makes sense.

I was told that the lyrics to this song was Missy's way of reaching out to a girl in her grade at school who was anorexic, personally i find that really touching.
