i think this song is about his obsession over a past relationship.he can't get over the girl and doesn't seem likely to ever be able to.She's like that one lover that always has an impact on your life hence the "some things last a long time" part.

I'm not a very emotional dude, but this song's simplicity and sincerity just hits me hard. The first time I heard it my eyes welled up with tears, something that's never happened to me before. It's a bona-fide jewel. Beach House does a great cover of it too.

great song, sad and sentimental. check out the Built to Spill cover on The Normal Years, it captures the same feeling with added anguish (and electric guitars), and Doug Martsch does a great job singing this one.
