Closer Lyrics

Your dream world is a very scary place
Your dream world is a very scary place
Your dream world is a very scary place
To be trapped in

Your dream world is a very scary place
Your dream world is a very scary place
Your dream world is a very scary place
To be trapped inside
Trapped inside
Trapped inside
All your life

Shine in time
Shine in time
Shine in time
Until you find

You're closer
You're closer
You're closer
To the truth

Within you
Within you
Within you
Is the truth

That your dream world is a very scary place
Your dream world is a very scary place
Your dream world is a very scary place
To be trapped in

Your dream world is a very scary place
Your dream world is a very scary place
Your dream world is a very scary place
To be trapped inside
Trapped inside
Trapped inside
All your life

Shine in time
Shine in time
Shine in time
Until you find

You're closer
Closer
You're closer
To the truth

Within you
Within you
Within you
Is the truth

This song is the best off the natural disaster album. It's so different but so amazing. I thought that in verse 6 it changes to "your dream is such a lonely, lonely place" i'm sure it does.

this is a very spiritual/psychological song. The dream world could be some kind of metaphor for schitzofrenia. I have a schitzofrenic friend, and its like hes in a dream world that he cant escape from. however amidst his impossible psychotic rants are some very intense truths. I would imagine that if i was schitzofrenic and i thought i knew the answer to the cosmos i would feel trapped. and afraid

Yeah I never noticed that, but you are right.

Isolation is the theme of this song. The way the song is presented is so abstract and detached from the human anathema that it is almost like the inner voice singing rather than the physical being. It's the idea that no matter who we meet or what we do it all ends at some point, and we can't cling onto our happiness forever which makes this life so lonely and scary that we have to face it all on our own.

This is a great song, but... if I listen to it at night, it scares the fucking shit out of me. It makes me think of someone who's trapped in his own head...

I agree with most people that this song starts off quite isolated (Your dream world is a very scary place, later: lonely place). But later on the song expresses hope: "You're closer Closer You're closer To the truth

Within you Within you Within you Is the truth"

Finding some truth within is always quite shocking, and can co-occur with very scary moments inside this dream world... until finally you break out and find peace (truth).

My Interpretation

I find that the song can be taken as a comment on sublimity. The Dream world is a spiritual state and is the closest thing that humans have to understanding the sublime (the infinity that is the entirety of the universe, which is by definition unknowable), which is both monstrous and beautiful; ie. "scary place" and "closer to the truth". Just read Kant's work on the sublime, It can be a tough read but very worth while.
