State Of The Union Lyrics
If we're the flagship of peace and prosperity
We're taking on water and about to fuckin' sink
No one seems to notice, No one even blinks
The crew all left the passengers to die under the sea
[Chorus]
Countdown, to the very end,
Equality, an invitation that we wont extend
Ready aim, pull the trigger now,
in time you firmly secure your place in hell
State of the union address,
reads war torn country still a mess
the words: power, death, and distorted truth
are read between the lines of the red, white, and blue
[Chorus]
'Guilty' is what our graves will read,
no years, no family,
we did nothing to stop the murder of a people just like us
We're taking on water and about to fuckin' sink
No one seems to notice, No one even blinks
The crew all left the passengers to die under the sea
Countdown, to the very end,
Equality, an invitation that we wont extend
Ready aim, pull the trigger now,
in time you firmly secure your place in hell
reads war torn country still a mess
the words: power, death, and distorted truth
are read between the lines of the red, white, and blue
no years, no family,
we did nothing to stop the murder of a people just like us

This isn't screamo, this is hardcore punk. Calling this song screamo is an insult to a great band! But I agree, this band can do no wrong. Except signing to a major label, but I can forgive 'em for that.
I love driving to this song. Sounds awesome blasting at full throttle through the subs
ur a spaz
ur a spaz
this song actually is about the war. tim usually introduces this song during their live shows with a line like: "this is a big fuck you to george fucking bush and his fucking war." so there's very little debating that one :P
Does anyone else think that first verse really parallels the current economic situation concerning the Government shutdown? "The crew all left the passengers to die under the sea" -- Instead of compromising on the budget, Congress is just abandoning ship and letting it shut down. Leaving all us citizens/passengers who depend on a Gov't paycheck on our own, to drown.
It's about all the bad things the goverment has done and how the people didn't do anything about it and not just about the militarys actions, it becomes very clear in;
"Guilty' is what OUR graves will read, no years, no family, we did nothing to stop the murder of a people just like us "
Means that we become just as guilty by just standing and watching as if we were doing it.
"No one seems to notice, No one even blinks"
I'm probably wrong on this, as Rise Against as never covered such a topic, but I feel like this song has to do with slavery.
The entire first verse really makes me think of the Middle Passage when African slaves are being transported like overstocked cargo on boats across the Atlantic Ocean.
As for "Equality, an invitation that we won't extend" - well, that's pretty self explanatory. Despite claiming equality for all, Americans still saw African Americans as inferior, and they were provided with way fewer rights, if any at all.
And for "We did nothing to stop the murder of a people just like us" - Timothy is stating that we continued to kill people, who we thought were less than human, while in reality they were hardly different from us at all.
That's my interpretation - Hope it helped! :-)
i can't believe no one has commented on this song! well i think that this song pretty much explains itself. i love the screaming, the intro, and the first verse. very nice. its just about how america can suck sometimes, and yes, it can. and about the hell we will recieve because we've slaughtered thousands of innocent people. sucks.
Best song on the new CD
i love how this song just tears at everything that is wrong with the bully that is the United States of America. I'm canadian and have a very liberal point of view on things so I do disagree with most things the american military does and they have firmly sercured their place in hell.
This is one of my favorite songs to hear live. You've gotta love Tim's intensity during this song...but then again, when is he not intense?
