Shadow Of Deth Lyrics

Auxilium meum a Domino

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures
He leadeth me beside the still waters
He restoreth my soul

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I will fear no evil; for thou art with me
Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies
Thou anoitest my head with oil; my cup runneth over
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever

indeed, he sung it in a manner that contradicts the lyrics, obviously it was intentional to sing it in a demonic-like voice. When i first heard this i didnt recognise it, then i recognised one of the verses and i thought 'hang on a minute, isnt this from the bible?' I think that was the intention of this song

@Ben2k9 Yeah, I agree. I didn't think he was trying to be demonic or anything... It just sounds like he's taking the mickey...

I think everything in this song makes perfect sense:

  • The psalm was written by David the King
  • David spent probably half his life in wars, thus also hiding and running away from enemies
  • Valley of the shadow of death = War (war sounds in background)
  • "I will fear no evil; for thou art with me" (Help comes from my lord)

This is likely in part as a reference to Dave's darkest days of struggle with drugs/demons. At one point he had to take a "Spiritual advisor" (pastor) on tour to help him with demons.

I was very surprised when i first listened to this song (in a good way). This is the most famous psalm of all, even my granma's favorite.

@dr.zaius: It's easy for people with no beliefs or with a life full of hate to mock people who have beliefs (call christians "pussy" and so on) and have found inner peace through God. Your choice but you are harming no one but yourself.

I have no problem with the religious music. But (theres always a but) keep all of it one album, like Slayer. Just a whole Christian CD. Not this metal-metal-prayer-metal thing.

My Opinion

@DanStranger51 Do you mean like how Slayer writes the same 'religious' message every album? Dave sounds like he's mocking on this track... I'd hardly call it a call to prayer! ;)

Excerpt from the book of Pslams. Very cool lead-in to "My Kingdom Come." Pretty basic.

yeah its Pslam 23 but the word are changed a bit ( i got bored in RE)

@FoRwHoMtHeBeLlToLlS It could just be a different translation then the one you were looking at, example: 2nd Timothy 1:7 NKJV(New King James Version), For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2nd Timothy 1:7 ESV(English Standard Version), for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. If I had to guess without any research this song probably used the King James Version.

Dave puts a lot of war-like sounds in the background of this song. Think about it...there's a burning torch, hoof-pounding of a horse, harsh winds, and war drums. I think he's trying with the harsh voice to sound like an ancient general. So, I think this song is Dave's rousing speech before battle.

To take it further (off course?) I think this may be Dave saying "I'm still here and I'm still ready to fight for metal."

No. The war sounds are going on around him. Psalm 23 is about the worst pep talk you can give your soldiers before battle...maybe okay after battle when the fighting is over.

Just look at how peaceful the first verse is. Laying down in green pastures, by still waters, with his God restoring his soul.

What the song means is, even though all this death and war is surrounding him (after all, it IS the valley of the shadow of death), he knows that God will lead him out of there to a fulfilling life (cup running over, goodness and mercy following him all the days of his life, dwelling in the house of the Lord).
