Bug a Martini

Found out recently that Echo is one of two communications satellites that was launched in the '60's by the US in order to pinpoint Moscow geographically for a nuclear strike.

The Triad refers to a nuclear deterrence system used during the cold war: Land strike, Air Strike and Submarine Strike. This was used by both sides as a countermeasure system, it was unlikely that all three systems would be taken out before a retaliatory launch could be initiated by the remaining ones. Canada (where I'm from) offered up its northern most islands to the US to use as part of the Land Strike, being able to launch ICBM's over the North Pole.

Dead Letterbox is a reference to a type of information transfer used by spies. It is a method where information was dropped into a 'mail' or 'letterbox' near a graveyard (where no one would really NEED to send or receive mail) to be picked up by the intended recipient. It came to mean any kind of drop where there was no direct contact between parties.

This song seems to be about suicide. Looking at the lyrics: "line up the dots", the obvious meaning of this is the dots on a medicine bottle that you have to align in order to access the pills. An medicines have been called elixirs, so therefore and elixir of quietude could be the elixir of death. Also, when a person overdoses with the goal of death, they have usually consumed alcohol, hence the reference to matrinis and alcohol.

i always thought it was about watching old spy movies...like James Bond type stuff...there's generally a lot of murder, etc. in them which may be why she references death so much in the song.

Yeah, it makes me imagine her as a spy too. I always think of her as a female spy out there with male spies, who have different ways of getting the information ' your version - coercion (ie they beat and torture people) my version - elixir of quietude (a kind of more sinister 'cyanide in your martini', no blood, no gore, just a very smooth kill and then on to the next)

I think the "elixir of quietude" is even simpler than that. I agree that the "guy's" version is coercion or beating the info out of someone, but I think Tori's is more a sense of lulling them into a sensual hypnosis rather than poisoning them. I think the "bug a martini" line means just that. Hand me a bugged (equipped with a listening device) martini and I'll walk around the party with it gathering intel.

I don't know how that dude at the top managed to interpret this song as being about suicide. Nothing at all suggests this, but meh, everyone can have their opinion.

I always think of Tori wishing she were a Russian spy or something...wanting to get to Moscow to poison someone's martini and convincing them that her song is great music to die to :) Considering the content the song is actually really cute!
