Nobody Has to Stay Lyrics

rest up in the gentle sway
sister make a flower place
a mother father brother grace
a river of stone to keep her safe

come away with me today
everthing should be okay
fill your pockets while you pray
with some to eat and some to save

nobody has to stay
but we wish they would
anyways

it is the evening of the days
where we have chosen to remain
and while you hurt with all that pain
the stars will kiss your pretty face

come away with me today
everthing should be okay
fill your pockets while you pray
with some to eat and some to save

nobody has to stay
but we wish they would
anyways

I lived with my grandma from 9 years old to 21 ( 19-21 were college visits). When she passed way in December 2010, I didnt know what the fuck to do. All I did was listen to this song,, It meant that grieving has its place,,..that the moments are all the matter. All I knew after my gma passed away, was to live life the way she would want me to, Happy. Compassionate, Hardworking and never judging. If anybody made me an anthropologist grandma MARY did. AND grandma JULIE gave me everything.

I always listen to this song when I feel like I've lost faith in the people close to me. It never ceases to just help, and I wish I could offer a great explanation, but I just don't feel like I would do justice to the beautiful simplicity in the song.

This song is really beautiful, and no matter how much I listen to it, I still get the feeling that she's talking about death. And I can perfectly relate to every word with just having my mom recently pass away. Truly amazing.

i definitely also think this song is about death. mirah often somewhat obscures the absolute denoted meaning... but i think the way she sings the song and the words she chooses point to the 'death' interpretation.

i agree with the death statements, however, i believe it is more specifically a suicide. the lines "nobody has to to stay, but we wish they would anyway" say to me that people have the option of staying or going, but we would prefer that they stay. and the lines "sister make a flower place, a mother, father, brother grace" kind of seem to me that the person who died was younger. not many funeral include both the siblings and the parents unless the death was premature, which is usually suicide in cases of younger people. the line "sister make a flower place" just kind of gently paints the image of maybe a younger sister for some reason. i also know mirah is from washington state, where the suicide rate there in unbelievably high (in seattle, particularly)

also when she says "and while you hurt with all that pain, the sky will kiss your pretty face" it kind of speaks to me that the person who died was obviously hurting, which is why they would take their own life, and then the belief that they will be greeted after death by something beautiful. i guess i just am relating it this way because my best friend just committed suicide, and this song speaks so clearly about it to me.
