Patterns In The Ivy (Part 2) Lyrics
Without you I cannot confide in anything
The hope is pale designed in light of dreams you bring
Summer's gone, the day is done soon comes the night
Biding time, leaving the line and out of sight
One moonlit shadow on the wall
Disrupted in its own creation
Veiled in the darkness of this fall
Is this the end - manifestation
It runs in me, your poison seething in my veins
This skin is old and stained by late September rains
A final word from me would be the first for you
The rest is long but I'll go on inside and through
One moonlit shadow on the wall
Disrupted in its own creation
Veiled in the darkness of this fall
Is this the end - manifestation
Patterns in the Ivy
The hope is pale designed in light of dreams you bring
Summer's gone, the day is done soon comes the night
Biding time, leaving the line and out of sight
One moonlit shadow on the wall
Disrupted in its own creation
Veiled in the darkness of this fall
Is this the end - manifestation
It runs in me, your poison seething in my veins
This skin is old and stained by late September rains
A final word from me would be the first for you
The rest is long but I'll go on inside and through
One moonlit shadow on the wall
Disrupted in its own creation
Veiled in the darkness of this fall
Is this the end - manifestation

Well, this is my first post, and this is what this songs (PITI I and PITI II) brings to my imagination: Have you ever visited an abandoned graveyard?. With Patterns In The Ivy i've always thought about the process of the graveyard being abandoned, the nature taking over the place, the seasons passing by, some headstones broken or covered by plants ("Ivy"). Patterns In The Ivy II are, in my opinion, the thoughts of the ones who were in the graves (if they could see what had happened to them), how they see that their only companion is the nature, the ivy, something that eventually will destroy their last remains. It put in words the cycle of existence how once we're vanished and no longer exist our place will be filled with new life.
This seems apt, and very clever.

I think many of you are right about many things, but here is my meaning.
I think the title "Patterns in the Ivy" refers to two lives, which have over time, made a pattern twisted into each other. And I think the lyrics talks about one of them dying, and the other one is unable to grow further alone.
But the text also mentions a deeper meaning, with some religious sense, i think. "Is this the end - manifestation" talks about the difference between it all ending after death, and being reborn after death.
"A final word for me would be the first for you, The rest is long but I'll go on inside and through" shows that his last word would be his last, and he will be going straight through after death. While her last word would be the first word in a new life, and will rest long.
So my interpretation: A couple where one is a believer and one is not, or maybe that the latter is simply not willing to receive the gift of eternal rest.
what does the song mean and what does patterns in the ivy mean?
I think this song is about someone of old age who had someone close to them die, but in the sadness of their loss, they grow sick because of the sadness and they too eventually die.
I agree with LP444ever, and I'm thinking that the Ivy is the plant growing across the person in question's grave or tombstone, maybe?
I do agree with the common idea of what people think this song's about, but there's one line that makes this sound darker than simply having someone close to them die. The line is: "Is this the end - Manifestation". Just my opinion, if anyone could clear up any confusion about that line, that'd be great.
It might be about Mikaels daughter. "A final word from me would be the first for you" He is describing what might happen if he were to die while she still was young, or if she died, wgat effect that would have.
The manifestation selection of the song pertains to conscious feelings, ideas, and impulses that contain repressed psychic material. It's almost as though Mike is trying to describe a short dillusion before dying. Not dying literally but more of a subconcious/metaphorical statement.
"Is this the end..." is him not talking about himself but about another as though he is skeptical of thier departure.
Mike describes a loved one whome he is very close to passing on. In the second verse he's describing what this other character was like personality wise whilst still living. "A final word from me would be the first for you" states how he is essentially loved in return because the other character listened while he spoke and cherished it like he did they.
Mike's daughter hadn't been born yet when this song was written/recorded.
one small thing w/ the lyrics he does say "patterns in the ivy" at the end. Its my favorite part so thats why I mentioned it.
I'm confused. I have Patters In The Ivy on my Blackwater Park album. Which album is Patterns 2 on? :S forgive me if I seem dumb, I have all 9 Opeth cd's. Maybe I am just being dumb but could someone please clear this up for me?
