Romanticide Lyrics
God love and rest my soul
With this sundown never ending
The feel is gone yet you ain't gonna see me fail
I am the decadence of your world
I am an eider covered in oil
Happy hunting, you double-faced carnivore
Tell me why
No heart to cry
Hang me high
The music is dead, the amen is said
The kiss of faith is what I beg
A loving heart 'n soul for sale
Tell me why
Leave me be
And cease to tell me how to feel
To grieve, to shield myself from evil
Leave me be
OD of lies is killing me
Romanticize
Till love do me part
See me ruined by my own creations
Leave me be
Dead Boy's alive but without sense
I need a near-death experience
Heart once bold
Now turned to stone
Perfection my messenger from hell
Wine turns to water
Campfires freeze, love letters burn
Romance is lost
Lord, let me be wrong in this pain
Temporary pain, eternal shame
To take part in this devil's chess game
Spit on me, let go, get rid of me
And try to survive your stupidity
With this sundown never ending
The feel is gone yet you ain't gonna see me fail
I am the decadence of your world
I am an eider covered in oil
Happy hunting, you double-faced carnivore
No heart to cry
Hang me high
The kiss of faith is what I beg
A loving heart 'n soul for sale
And cease to tell me how to feel
To grieve, to shield myself from evil
Leave me be
OD of lies is killing me
Romanticize
Till love do me part
I need a near-death experience
Heart once bold

....A bit like Slaying the Dreamer for a relationship.....He's been betrayed by someone, and he's saying that he knows just how deceptive and vain they are ("double-faced carnivore"). He doesn't understand why he was betrayed ("Tell me why") but wants people around him to stop trying to 'guide' him through it ("Leave me be, And cease to tell me..."). His "creations" could be his own work or the illusions he allowed himself to create about this person. The line about the "Dead Boy" is an obvious reference to the earlier song. (For some reason the line that jumps out at me is "And you....I wish I didn't feel for you anymore...") "Wine turns to water" is another reference to a lost illusion or 'miracle'. "Lord let me be wrong..." could be his inner plea that this had never happened. The "Temporary pain..." verse is him saying "Oh, you screwed up big time..."
That's what I'm getting from it right now....Maybe in a few days I'll get something different.
One last thing, anyone getting the slightest inkling that this was written when things were really rough within the band? Might explain why they don't do it live....
This was one of the first songs I heard from The Once album but it took me awhile to really get into it and enjoy it. It is certainly quite a heavy Nightwish song but the guitar riffs are excellent, the 'chugging' guitar really gives a sense of power. I think it is that power that symbolises the feelings in this songs, wanting to break free, feeling lost in where you currently are (a relationship) and the anger that you are here wishing to be somewhere else where you can be free to be who you should be.
Can't believe this song doesn't have more comments. This is an amazing song I love it. It really does give you a sort of power sense as Lailseax said
Kinda good song. power full indeed
Satakieli, I think your comment is spot on.
I also think that the "eider covered in oil" line refers to himself being the vulnerable target, and the "double-faced carnivor" took advantage and hurt him badly.
I think the song as a whole is about being hurt so badly that you are afraid to love again, hence the title 'Romanticide' e.g. anti-romance and the line "till love do me part" e.g. love will be the end of me.
You know that by adding -cide to the end of a song, means "the death of".

Suicide: "Death by him or herself," etc. So Romanticide isn't "anti-romance" it's "the death of romance"

Wow. I think Dark Artist got it right. This is definitely an artist's rejection/betrayal song, which is only worse when it comes to romance. I have been there before.
its about a failed relatioship... "see me ruined by my own creations" its no-one's fault he [tuomas] got into that relationship but his own
"Happy hunting, you double-faced carnivore" those lines are sheer amazing...
i agree with everyone about this song, being betrayed.
Hmm I don't know, I'm getting a completely different meaning of this song. I think that it is partly a part of the same theme as Dead Gardens, about not being able to create even though you wish to. I think that can be seen in lines as "The music is dead, the angel is said" and "Perfection my messinger from hell". The "Dead Boy's alive..." and "Wine turns to water..." verses might show that what kept him creating and all the emotions that followed are gone. I think in Dead Gardens, he was sad about it, here he is angry and ashamed, and the pressure from the surrounding world is much higher. Thuss the corus.
To me, this song has to do with being in love with someone who has hurt you or really doesn't have the same feelings for you as you do for them.
