Darlene Lyrics

I knew these two people
And, um . . . a boy and a girl
And they liked to hang together

They were nice people
Um . . . they were the people
That made you feel good
To be around

Anyway, the thing was
One day, they started acting
Kinda funny . . . kinda weird

They started being seen
Exchanging tokens of affection
And there were rumors that they were
Engaging in

I think that they'd run out of time

You know what happened to them?
You know what they do?
What they became?
You know what happened to them?
You know what they do?
What they became?
You know what happened to them?

krig, i agree with your intepretation. furthermore, the childish wording and the repetition of that solemn chord in the last stanza lead me to believe that the speaker obsessed over their relationship, and it eventually became the bane of his childhood -- the first step in a transgression from innocence to a world of selfishness and sex.

possibley about 3 childhood friends, to of which began dating and the other feeling betrayed and left behind. greatest band that ever was.

after listening to this album again, after he say "engaging in..." he says "you get what i mean", so it was most likely implying "..sexual activity" or something of the sort. the ambiguity and the way it is worded makes it sound like an adult explaining a story in a childish way.

I think the speaker is looking for the couple.

When he starts asking the questions at the end of the song, it seems like he's asking them rhetorically, as if to make an example of them.

But then he keeps asking the questions over and over again, and it becomes increasingly clear that he doesn't know what happened to them. He's asking you in hopes that you can tell him.

@Songmeaningsuser

the lack of resolution builds tension, intentionally i reckon (which is present in lots of slint tracks). i enjoy it. :)

brian mcmahon sure matured quite a bit in going from writing lyrics like these to the lyrics in spiderland songs

I think this song might be about 2 good people that he knew, but then they engaged in sexual activity and started dating & went their own way. They moved somewhere & the singer (Brian McMahan) has no idea where they went. He's really curious & sounds kind of worried, hence the repetition of the last verse

Indeed. This could be really good, but it's very vague and ambiguous. It's entirely open to interpretation. And that last line in the 4th stanza doesn't resolve itself, which doesn't help.

what's wrong with being open to interpretation?
