The Best Of Jill Hives Lyrics
Paid up, weathered and type O,
Clad in gladstone watch him go [wash and go???],
Swimming 'neath the microscope.
Hello lonely bless the nation.
Mr. Skip to all or none,
Wooden [wouldn't???] soldiers fall upon,
Try to find what makes her tick,
While they're finding out what makes them sick.
I don't know where you find your nerve,
I don't know how you choose your words,
Speak the ones that suit you worse,
Keep you grounded, sad and cursed,
Circle the ones that come alive,
Save them for the best of Jill Hives.
Been around and left you flat,
Tragically decided that,
Every child of God's a brat,
And she's dying to escape them.
But do we really need to see
All her punchdrunk history,
And which of it might hold the key
For the exit to her destiny.
I don't know where you get your nerve,
I don't know how you choose your words,
Speak the ones that suit you worse,
Keep you grounded, sad and cursed,
Circle the ones that come alive,
Save them for the best of Jill Hives.
I don't know where you find your nerve,
I don't know how you choose your words,
Speak the ones that suit you worse,
Keep you grounded, sad and cursed,
Circle the ones that come alive,
Save them for the best of Jill Hives.
Number one in all our souls,
Trifle in the crystal bowl,
Fill it up with 9 to 5,
Save them for the best of Jill Hives.

This is the only thing I could find about it. An interview with the lead singer:
Kurt: On the song ‘The Best of Jill Hives’ who is Jill Hives?
Bob: Jill Hives is not a real person. I was having my muffler fixed on my car and I was sitting in the waiting room with some people watching television so I played this game I play sometimes when I can’t quite hear what people are saying, I’ll start writing what I think they’re saying. There was a soap opera on the TV called The Best of Our Lives and I must of thought they were saying the Best of Jill Hives.
Thanks for that. Cryptic stream of consciousness but it's Pollard's genius that it's still pregnant with multiple possible meanings. I really like this song.

The guitar after the 1st chorus and the 2nd verse sounds like "Big Country." Good song though! Come play Denver GBV!
what gives i totally commented on this song a long time ago lol....?
I love this song but...does anyone know what it means??
I always thought the song was from the standpoint of a misanthrope scientist trying to find a cure for cancer, and his mixed feelings about it.
It's hard for me to get the lyrics to hold together in total, but I do love the line "Every child of Gods a brat, and she's trying to escape them." Brilliant and funny. The melody also feels heartbreaking, but not in the standard saccharine pop music way.
