before Symbol of Life's release, Nick posted a blog entry or whatever to PL official site, where he expressed his hate for christmas as a shopping holiday. I think it might be related to this song a bit. I read it as expressing his disgust with how empty those 'special days' are now. just another occasion to consume...
I believe this is a song about depression. A person who feels like a new year is nothing to celebrate because there's nothing to celebrate. It also touches the fact that it's hard for people outside to understand such a depression ("you just don't care").
IMO it's about growing old and becoming jaded against utopian notions of better world.
"Take my hand/ Hurray for the winters come..." There is really nothing to celebrate other than the arrival of winter. "Cease my plans/ Excuse me from the scenes of old" I nonetheless continue in the things I've set out to do.
"I can meet you there?, I just don't care/ On this New Years Day/ With no celebration from me" People are waiting for me at this party, I go because I don't want them to worry or feel bad. But there is nothing worth celebrating.
"Understand/ There's comfort with the wealth of gold" There use to be some bigger value, now I seek only pleasure. "Increase demands/ Release me from the scenes of old" Though this attitude kinda sickens me.
I kinda feel the same way... Anyhow, happy new year 2008.
