Somewhere beyond happiness and sadness
I need to calculate
What creates my own madness
And I'm addicted to your punishments
And you're the master
And I am waiting for disaster

I feel irrational
So confrontational
To tell the truth I am
Getting away with murder
It is impossible
To never tell the truth
But the reality is
I'm getting away with murder
(Getting away, getting away, getting away)

I drink my drink and I don't even want to
I think my thoughts when I don't even need to
I never look back 'cause I don't even want to
And I don't need to
Because I'm getting away with murder

I feel irrational
So confrontational
To tell the truth I am
Getting away with murder
It is impossible
To never tell the truth
But the reality is
I'm getting away with murder
(Getting away, getting away, getting away, getting away)
(Getting away, getting away, getting away, getting away, getting away with murder)

Somewhere beyond happiness and sadness
I need to calculate
What creates my own madness
And I'm addicted to your punishments
And you're the master
And I'm craving this disaster

I feel irrational
So confrontational
To tell the truth I am
Getting away with murder
It is impossible
To never tell the truth
But the reality is
I'm getting away with murder
(Getting away, getting away, getting away)

I feel irrational
So confrontational
To tell the truth I am
Getting away with murder
It is impossible
To never tell the truth
But the reality is
I'm getting away with murder

Oh no! This song could have political connotations! Except no one knows anything about politics except ME!

    Boo-fucking-hoo

People in Rock bands have opinions on things too, and if you disagree and have a problem with their enhanced capacity to share their opinion, that's your problem.

As for what the song means to me it seems to not quite perfectly match one of:

1)Someone who is doing horrible things, "just following orders" and is delighted to have some sort of horrible punishment hanging over their head if they dont comply, because it completely exuses them from what theyre doing. By being threatened into doing whatever it is they escape judgement from others and from themself.

    2) Someone who is doing what their told and really being forced into it because of threat of some kind of punishment but they are happy that whatever their doing is going to somehow bring about the destruction of whoever is in charge. "You're the master, and I am craving this diasaster" the "murder" they are getting away with is the murder of the person calling the shots, they're getting away with it because they appear loyal or at least subservient.

3)Someone who is doing terrible things to some other person or persons and is aware that their behaviour is ultimately self-destructive. They are alternately remorseful and overwhelmed with the sense of power they get from getting away with it.

In all cases what they're doing might actually be murder, or it could be something else malicious.

Techno Ted
Audioslave
Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Cajun Girl

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
