Brooklyn Dodgers Lyrics

sorry I walked away when you told me what you were scared of the night that you turned 12
trying not to cry in front of your older brother
he knows where I live, he's not interested
I can't have nice things,
like a boy who stays who stays around
when I needed him the most on your walk
hold your head up high and when you watch me fall
please look back for the last time
brooklyn dodger

i do not understand this song. from what im thinking, a boy is apologizing to his friend, the friend must have confided in him and told him one of his fears. since the boy said he walked away trying not to cry in front of the brother, maybe the brother abuses the other boy. "he knows where I live, he's not interested" maybe that is just the boy reassuring himself in his head that hes OK. he cant have a good friendship (nice thing) because he left when his friend needed him the most. they're parting, but he needs one last memory of what he could have had. can someone else please comment on this song?

This is probably a stretch, but i think this song is about childhood friends drifting apart, possibly due to Jamie's or this boy's struggle to accept his own bisexuality.

"trying to not to cry in front of your older brother" Sounds like the boy's need to prove his masculinity. The whole image of the friend walking away suggests his homophobic abandoment of Jamie.

for some reason when i hear the lines, "on your walk hold your head up high and when you watch me fall please look back for the last time brooklyn dodger",

it makes me think of a death row inmate taking the "walk" to his execution and looking back at his childhood friend who walked away instead of protecting him from his older brother "for the last time."

but i definately think that what explosion says happened to the boy when he was a kid, could have led him to commit a crime later on.

I actually read in an interview that he wrote this song to his brother when he moved to New York while Jamie was having a tough time.

Sometimes knowing the personal meaning behind a song can wreck what it means to you. I think Jamie writes lyrics intentionally vague so they can be interpreted how you like, I read something about that in an interview. This song, to me, is about a friend turning their back on another friend when they needed them most and that friend being so angry that they decide they don't want them anyways.

a kid told him his deepest fear, and hearing it almost made him cry, but he didn't want the kid's older brother to see, so he walked away, and this disappointed the first kid because it seemed like he (jamie)didn't care, when jamie really did, he just got too emotional about it and didn't want anyone to see. When they were 12. The first kid was angry no one was there for him, not even his best friend, that night. the kid never really forgave jamie, in turn did the same thing to him, and they were never there for each other in the same way again.

.....in Brookyln.

Maybe anyway.
