It seems that this song is based on th eold saying "Those who don't learn from the past, are doomed to repeat it", I think Howard is saying that he has learned from mistakes he has made and will use them to create a better future.
I think its about being forced to be something you're not and that you don't want to be. Then deicidin to move on and never go back to what you were before- "shatter the bonds that tie us to what we strive to never be".
Walesrox and quiffporn are both right, in their own senses. The song is about regret and learning from one's past misguidances, but it is also about nonconformity.
