Magic Mountain

I think this song is talking about drugs. They are seemingly helpful - the place is referred to as "Magic" Mountain - but once you are hooked, there is no way out: I live here on magic mountain No one leaves magic mountain The girl is obviously very deep in her drug obsession, and each day has lost its meaning: At magic mountain Nothing changes Everything stays the same Although the girl still has hope, she admits that she has lost all worth in her life. My heart can hear you sing My heart can see you speak But I never make it in the flatlands I must stay on magic mountain (I think the flatlands or lowlands refer to normal life, pre-drug use.)

To shed some light on the book this is based off of:

The main character goes to visit his cousin in a sanitarium isolated in a mountain. Everyone there is being treated for tuberculosis and death is very prominent in this place. The main character, whom only planned on stay in this place for three weeks, contracts tuberculosis and ends up staying there for seven more years. The last six years that he is there go by extremely quickly hence:

"Weeks go by like a day" Is referring to a major point within this novel, being that living such a monotone life in this secluded island makes you go into a routine that feels as though time passes extraordinarily quickly.

Although your examination about how this might be referring to drugs (Which it seems every other song now-a-days is assumed to be about drugs) is a bit off. Since "Lowlands" and "Flatlands" is what is referred to in the novel about ordinary life that doesn't rush by you, life not on the "Magic" mountain.

The girl's voice is so hauntingly beautiful. I think I'm in love. This band re-invents music for me.

Is this song not about the novel "the Magic Mountain" by Thomas Mann? I haven't read it, so I don't really know, but I suspect that's what it is. Especially if they're also referencing "Equus" by Peter Schaffer.

It is a reference to Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain. A lot of their songs are based on literature and it's amazzzzzzzzzzzzzzing how they do it, omg.
