Behind The Drapes Lyrics
All of us now bent as we fall
To amorous light we call out
Why are we so alone
Even with company?
If not the moon will us guide
Will then the street light?
All of us now breathe it like smoke
To know what it’s like
Breathing to choke
Well, for nine days
A small moth has tried to escape
Our bedroom
Why are we so alone
Even with company?
We are the prey
For each day a striking distance
Why are we so alone
Even with company?
If not the moon will us guide
Will then the street light?
Why are we so alone
Even with company?
We are the prey
For each day a striking distance
To amorous light we call out
Even with company?
If not the moon will us guide
Will then the street light?
To know what it’s like
Breathing to choke
Well, for nine days
A small moth has tried to escape
Our bedroom
Even with company?
We are the prey
For each day a striking distance
Even with company?
If not the moon will us guide
Will then the street light?
Even with company?
We are the prey
For each day a striking distance

To me this song is about growing up, but not wanting to fall into the rhythm of life all the adults are accustomed to. The daily grind. Like children hiding behind drapes at an adult dinner party because they're in their own little world separate from everything. And as they grow up they're being hurdled towards this expectation to mature and enter society and they're looking for some kind of sign to guide them and free them from their unwanted destinies. In essence, to me this song is about the mortality of innocent youth.
just. this song.
i think i can probably listen to it thousand times and never get bored. and get lost in jonas' voice.
O HOLY. nothing is written about this song. aow. it's so beautiful it hurts. the lyric is so nice!
LOVE
Wow i dont think this song is anywhere near one of my favourite Mew songs but the lyrics are amazingly touching ... I think this song might be about someone who is so in love with someone else that even when they are with them they miss them. Thats what im getting from it
These lyrics are wrong, it should be:
All of us now bent as we fall To amorous light we call out
Why are we so alone Even with company? If not the moon will us guide Will then the street light?

Why are we so alone Even with company? If not the moon will us guide Will then the street light?

"Why are we so alone? Even with company" To me, it's a song about feeling lost and vulnerable, and "If not the moon will us guide, will then the streetlight?" is about desperately searching for someone to help you through, and jumping from person to person to help you on your way.

Does anybody wonder about the title? At first I thought, OK, behind the drapes, things that go in in private that aren't known in public...but then I had to laugh at myself when I realized what it probably refers to. As in:
Well, for nine days A small moth has tried to escape Our bedroom
And that is where the moth is stuck no doubt--behind the drapes!!
i love this song. mew always makes me cheer up with these lonely songs.
as the title 'behind the drapes' suggests, we as individuals feel all left out. like in a stage when all the attention is on the actors on stage, the ones working hard behind the drapes don't get so much credit at all.
why are we so alone even with company? -- sometimes, even if we are with friends, there really are instances when we feel left out. not all the time do we feel really accompanied around people. like for instance, you are in a bus with all the people but none of them could offer you great company or something like that. you are still alone despite the number of people surrounding you.
if not the moon will us guide, will then the street lights. --it sounds like desperation and contentment all at the same time to me. we could all sometimes just depend on the street lights if someone who promised the moon cannot actually keep it.
