You're special
You're like rocket through me
Oh, you're special
You're a rocket to me
And I cannot this time

Agarina
You can't say no
Agarina
This time you will go

You're special
You're like a rocket through me
Oh, you're special
You're a rocket to me
And I cannot this time

There's a taste that you can't shake
But you can't seem to let them go awry
I know you're special
You're a rocket to me
At this surprised
All the time

I know what you said to me
And I don't care at the same time
But I'll take you up and down
Address it to you
Honey bee
I know what you said to me
And I don't care at the same time
And what do you stay to do?
I saw the worst of you

My Japanese friend confirmed the rumours for me that Agarina is in fact a very familiar, informal way of inviting someone into your home, and can also mean to take someone into your heart.

    So yeah.

And the song to me just means that there's someone you feel so strongly for, it's like a crazy, love at first sight, obsessive addiction to a person that you also know is very bad for you. Your body and your heart crave their presence, their touch, but your mind sees the bigger picture and it's like a nightmare, and you know it.

But your heart still wants to defy what your consciousness recognises (and perhaps things the toxic object of your affection had bluntly spelled out to you) and says "I know you said to me, but I don't care at the same time" because it still wants to give in to the craving and get the "fix" your body physically craves. To your own detriment (fully aware of it, of course).

Yes, the song is about sex. It's about a girl from a short-term relationship or a "friend with benefits" that is special because of the pleasure she gave him.

i think it's rather obvious that it's about sex. they even have the quite crude, yet common phallic symbol of a rocket.

the whole song, to me, is a bit dirty even though nothing dirty is said. The beat is dirty anyway. :)

But in a way, I think that it's about two people who only meet up for sex (or if they only meet up once, i don't know) and thus don't care about showing their "good side" like you'd do if you wanted a relationship.

So you can see the worst of someone but you don't care 'cause it's just sex yeah?

    My Interpretation

'Special' from my understanding is a song about the perspective of a guy who is no longer wanted by the girl that he loves, but they still sleep together even though he feels it isn't the moral thing to be doing. There are clues to this in the lyrics and the video backs it up.

Example: 'You're special, you're like a rocket for me' = He loves her and she turns him on... 'You're like a rocket for me, and I cannot this time' = He doesn't want to sleep with her 'Agarina, you can't say no, Agarina, this time you will go' She is inviting him, and knows he can't resist her, but this time you will go may mean that when the morning comes he will be gone or that he will turn her down. 'Theres a taste that you cant shake' the taste is his love or attraction for her 'That you can't seem to let them go awry' He can't move on and let her go, even though he should 'I know what you said to me, and I don't care at the same time' he knows its over, and she doesn't want him for anything more than sex, but despite that he will still sleep with her 'I'll take you up and down, address it to you' To be crude, he will screw her...

The video has many symbols also. The intro when the lady bursts from the water. water is a symbol of death and change. She is gone. The lady has short hair and the man has a beard. Both are often traditional symbols in some northern european societies of grieving the death of a loved one, or a widow or widower. The strange dance, obviously meaning to be sex. The castle or estate itself with the darkness of the forest could symbolise their refuge or relationship with the darkness or end around it (maybe :P) The fact that the video is shot in low light and black and white. The lovers have a sombre and intense look, as if they are enjoying their final moments. In the end the lady runs from the man, he gives chase desperately but she disappears under the water and he is left alone. Jonas, Bo, Silas and Johan look as if they may be dressed for a funeral.

That's just my interpretation, I guess based also on my own personal experiences it appeals to me a lot but I have always thought this song meant that.

uhh man it's obvious. For those very logical people saying it's about sex. Man that is why I feel a lot awkward listening to this song. I love Mew. Who are they writing this song to? 'agarina' means come on in??? In japanese? Oooh I see, I see... thanks gQgler.... But What they mean by 'special' is that girl is very special to him and he feels a lot happy thinking of that girl right??! I thought agarina was a name of a girl whose parents are Agrarians.

I'm not bothered so much by the meaning, but "You're like a rocket through me" has got to be one of the most beautiful similes ever.

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
