California Waiting Lyrics

Little Mona Lisa laying by my side
"Crimson and Clover" pullin' overtime
Seem too close to be losin' touch
By givin' in, what am I givin' up
Am I losin' way too much

Hey
California waiting
Every little thing's gotta be just right
Say
While you're tryin' to save me
Can't I get back my lonely life

I'm goin' so fast that I can't slow down
It's hard to get up when you're spinnin' round and round
I'd tell you the news but nothin's changed
I'd sing you a song but they blew it away
All wrapped up in this stupid ass game

Hey
California waiting
Every little thing's gotta be just right
Say
While you're tryin' to save me
Can't I get back my lonely life
Can't I get back my lonely life

i agree. kings of leon aren't getting their fair share of attention here.

i'm kind of baffled by the lyrics too. he's laying with this "mona lisa," most likely a really complicated girl, or a girl who's just stoic and unemotional. "Crimson and Clover" could be in reference to any song that's playing in the background because the phrase is in so many other songs.

i think that he's finally got the girl that he wanted but now he realizes that it's not what he thought it would be. he asks for his lonely life back because he loves the thought of missing this girl more than the actual girl in the flesh.

I disagree with the virginity theory, mainly because I've never met a guy who ever regretted losing their virginity. I think this song is about the dissapointment of relationships and having trouble making the decision to break up. "Seem too close to be losin' touch By givin' in, what am I givin' up Am I losin' way too much" This sounds like he's wrestling with his emotions and scared that the grass really isn't greener on the other side. The reference to California Waiting might be that he has the oportunity to go there for something better but it would mean the end of the relationship. "Can't I get back my lonely life" sounds like an ironic statement about wanting to be single again. Anyway, just my thoughts, could be completely wrong

i agree

i agree muuchh moree with your theory. it's much more profund than a matter of loosing his virginity or not, a guy would never regret that foor suree. yet i think the "can't i get back my lonely life" part means, in his head, even breaking up with her won't give him his single/lonely life back because (even though the relationship isn't working) he'd still miss the company or have some kind of regret for letting her go (that's why they are trapped in a "stupid ass game" because he has feelings for her, but sometimes even caring about someone...

i bet this song has nooothing to do with loosing his virginity. it's a song describing an ambivalent feeling towards a person and a relationship. the guy is thinking about his relationship with this girl, it's supposed his close to this woman but he feels distant,m he just can help wondering about what's with her smile ( like monalisa: is she happy? is she sad?) probably wondering how they got to this point in which he can't connect with her. he still has feelings for her but can't go back to what it was before..so he resorts to ways to release the emptiness he feels (I'm goin' so fast that I can't slow down It's hard to get up when you're spinnin' round and round) can't i get back my lonely life stands in my opinion to show he won't get back to what his life before her was: because he doesn't wont it as he doesn't know how to be lonely again as much as he doesn't know how to be open in a relationship

In my opinion, this song is about the so-called "rock n roll lifestyle" and how fame was making Caleb and the rest of the Followill boys (or really anybody that gains some sort of fame) lose touch with their former lives, as well as the music industry itself. So let's break this down:

"Little Mona Lisa layin' by my side" - This line sets a scene. Here he is with his girlfriend, one that he cares very much about and perhaps had even before the band got famous. She's asleep and he's awake thinking what's happening in his life. By calling her Mona Lisa, I assume all he means is that she's beautiful and is a masterpiece, like the Mona Lisa. "Crimson and Clover pullin' overtime" - You say 'Crimson And Clover' was the first song that really wowed Caleb. Assuming that's true, this line probably means that he's been listening to the song a lot in order reconnect with how his life used to be and how this (his life as a musician) all got started. Therefore, he's likely nostalgic for the good old days of his younger years. "Seem too close to be losing touch" - These things (girlfriend, his true passion for music, family, childhood, etc.) are very close to his heart and he seems to be afraid that he will lose them as his band becomes more and more famous. "By givin' in, what am I givin' up?/Am I losin' way too much?" - Once again, fearful and nervous about what he will lose when he gives in to fame and the music industry.

"Hey, California waiting" - Where do people go to get famous? That's right kids, California! So basically, this line means it appears fame, fortune, and L.A. are all staring him in the face and waiting for him to accept them. He doesn't seem to like that fact. "Every little thing's gotta be just right" - The industry wants perfection of him and his band. They want to change them so that they are a sleek, polished, and stylish band that is easy to accept for the mainstream. They want to make every little thing just right so that they can cash in. "Say, while you're tryin' to save me/Can I get back my lonely life?" - These businessmen think they're saving him from some sort of terrible, small-town commoner life (GOOD GOD! The horror of being...gasp...a regular person!). Really though, he just wants his life to be, y'know, normal and not crowded by bigwigs and groupies and all the shit that comes with rock stardom.

"I'm goin' so fast that I can't slow down" - Fast forward. His life has become hectic now that he's a big rockstar. He's out there living the party life and he can't seem to get back to how life used to be, which is what he really wants. "It's hard to get up when you're spinnin' round and round" - He's confused and dizzy from this rush of fame and stardom. He feels like he's been knocked down and he can't get up because his life is going too fast for him. "I'd tell you the news, but nothin's changed" - Here, it turns out this big, grand life of a rockstar is not as great as anybody made it out to be. His family and friends ask what everything's like, but really he's just the same old guy. Now he's just stuck in this frantic and fast-paced rock 'n' roll life. He doesn't seem to like this either. "I'd sing you a song, but they blew it away" - The record company could not give less of a damn about his music and what it's trying to say, they just want him for the money he'll make them. If his band were to lose their popularity, they'd probably be dropped in a split second. His songs don't even seem to have meaning anymore. "All wrapped up in this stupid ass game" - Pretty self-explanatory.

The first time I heard this song, I thought it sounded very optimistic and fun, kinda like "California Sun" (The Ramones version moreso than any other for sound). Then, after taking a closer look st the lyrics, turns out it's quite the opposite. Anyway, there it is folks. Hope my interpretation helps clear up any confusion. See you all on the net. Remember to rock to the rhythm and bop to the beat of the radio.

No comments? WHY? This is such a great song.

I dont understand the reference to "crimson and clover". Its in other songs too.

it's an old favorite of caleb's, i've seen him talk about it in an interview

In the interview Caleb saids the song (Crimson and Clover) is about taking a girl's virginity in the grass.

...The lost of pureness/youthfulness

Im not sure if everyone knows this but since thier father was a preacher they were only alowwed to listen to gospel music growing up ... I saw an interview where Caleb said Crimson and Clover was the first song he heard besides gospel when he was getting a ride home from school with one of his friends!

crimson and clover is a song by joan jett, so its a possibility whichever bandmember wrote this song listened to "crimson and clover" alot

Caleb talk about listening to the song in an interivew.

to me the "crimson and clover" refrence can mean two things. it could be that sense the phrase is used so much it lost its true meaning and that is happening to many other things. it could also mean that because it is in so many songs almost anything you listen to will have it those are just my opinions though

Well just in reference to that comment about the Mona Lisa - a Mona Lisa smile is one that doesn't reveal but invites, something that makes you think something is on her mind but it's nothing she's going to reveal to you. She's not necessarily stoic and unemotional; he might just not be able to understand her motives. ;D
