Closer Lyrics

Stranded in this spooky town
Stoplight is swaying and the phone lines are down
Floor is crackling cold
She took my heart, I think she took my soul
With the moon I run
Far from the carnage of the fiery sun

Driven by the strangle of vein
Showing no mercy I'd do it again
Open up your eyes
You keep on crying
Baby I'll bleed you dry
Skies are blinking at me
I see a storm bubbling up from the sea

Now it's coming closer
Now it's coming closer

You shimmy-shook my boat
Leaving me stranded all in love on my own
Do you think of me
Where am I now
Baby where do I sleep
Feels so good but I'm old
Two thousand years of chasing taking its toll

Now it's coming closer
Now it's coming closer

Now it's coming closer
Now it's coming closer

Wow. These lyrics are insane. there all about how he's so unsure of how she REALLY feels about him. He's bled for her and will over and over again..even if its getting old. he loves her so much...but he can't believe that her way of loving is real. he compares them to eachother and feels she's not into it as much as him. he can't accept that she can love as deeply, only in her own stormy way. love this song.

I love how the noise in the background almost seems to be in pain. It adds that much more to the song.

I still think it's: two thousand not two hundred. The number is important, because it clearly points towards religion.

But it's not about religion, it's more about love, about the loss of it. I love the first part of the song oozes with anxiety. Words paint you a view, of when the hurricane is about to hit, the lines about the storm bubbling up on the sea kinda hint this out, and those swaying stop signs, plus phone lines being down.

So with all that unrest, you feel that something bad is about to happen, lonliness possibly? It's coming. So what do you do in that sytuation? you doubt. You doubt in love, the worst part of it that you'll feel like that many times, because that's life: "driven by the strangle of veins". So you loose your will to live, yet biologically you still go on. That means you gotta go forward and look for something new. The idea of looking for ideal love, looks familliar to christianity doesn't it? where you struggle for faith for your entire life. That's why the two thousand might be the key to the song.

My Interpretation

sbto, I completely agree with you about the beginning of this song... It like its just trying to pull tears from your eyes... Also I think this song is about the inevitable loss we all face... whatever it is...

Yeah!!! me too!!! This is the first time I think of vampires. I also thought it was about loneliness, and how everything is spooky and down when you're feeling so low.

Not Valid

You're right it is 2000 years. You could hear it clearly in the song:

I agree with you. I think its possibly about losing faith - love. Especially after reading this:

"Three brothers and a cousin, all aged between 16 and 23, they were raised as traveling Pentecostals and dragged from Memphis to Oklahoma City and just about everywhere in between by their defrocked preacher daddy, Leon Followill, who also happened to be an alcoholic. Along the way, they slept in cars, trailers and churches and were tutored by...

"She took my heart, I think she took my soul" - She turn his world upside down, he wasn't himself anymore his life completely changed.

"Leaving me stranded all in love on my own, do you think of me?" - I think this is self explanatory, "does she still think of him?"

"Open up your eyes" - Telling himself that he has to be realistic about the situations that happen and he has to "wake up."

"Baby I'll bleed you dry" - Means that he will try his best to forget about the girl until she is dry out of his system.

"Two thousands years of chasing taking it's toll" - He is tired of chasing her, always thinking about her until the point of frustration. He is realizing that thinking about her all the time is not worth it anymore.

I think this song is about realizing everything that happen during a break up, it's almost like he is trying to convinced himself to change for the better. Like getting over a break up that ended badly and he wants to move on from that episode in his life.

That's what I feel this song means.

Why the hell would KOL write a song about Twilight? I'm a teenage girl, I've read the series, and whilst I understand why some people would find connections between the song and the books, I enjoyed Closer on a much deeper level after I listened to it just once, than I will ever enjoy the (at best) mediocre Twilight series. I just cannot put the two together, it seems to me to be an insult to the song to even associate the two.

i don't believe this song has anything to do with vampires, but the fact that this guy has been waiting for this girl to come around for a very long time.

the first part of the song shows signs of loneliness. the narrator feels like he's all alone since she isn't there and that his life feels empty and cold without her there. she left him and broke his heart.

second part resembles that this "strangle of veins" is the loss of blood he's feeling from not having her around. same as the first, even though she hurt him by leaving him, he'll go through it again just to have her around because his love for her is so strong. but something he's doing is making her unhappy and the "coming closer" signifies that he feels the end of their relationship coming.

he'll wait as long as it takes and the 2000 years is just to show that he's been waiting for what seems to be like forever, but he loves this girl so much that he'll wait as long as it takes for her to come around and be with him.

I love this song.

I started looking up KoL after hearing Use Somebody several times -- I love that song too -- and I've listened to this song, oh... eight times in a row now? Something like that? I took a brief interlude where I listened to Cold Desert -- also good! -- but now I'm back to this one. If I buy the album, which I'm leaning very heavily towards, it'll be because of this song.

I don't want to say this song is about vampires, as much as I love vampires (fyi, I'm not one of those Twilight fangirls) because that's just... I don't know, I just don't want to say that. But maybe it is. Who am I to say? Maybe it's about reincarnation. It could be.

And I just love the way he sings the lines, "Do you think of me? Where am I now, baby, where do I sleep?" He wails it. It's great.

If KOL say it's a vampire reference...it must be! It sounds more like being emotionally detached and using people you are in a relationship to feel something. Then they get tired of just being drained and getting nothing in return. So they leave you, still having feelings for them.

when I read in rolling stone it was about a vampire it just made sooo much more sense to me... and the line "I see a storm bubbling up from the sea" reminds me a lot of the book Dracula, this line has a lot to do to something that happens in the story.

the song is about Caleb's old drug/substance abuse as he refers to the drugs as 'her' and 'she' and 'baby' he is singing about how lonely he was how addictive 'she' was and how the drugs just seem to be getting closer and closer until it finally takes over him.

one of my favourite songs ever.
