Joey Keys was from my neighborhood
Some would say he was bad
Joe thought bad was good
Say he got the name "Keys" picking locks
He never really robbed no one
It sure amused the cops
Joey's parents owned the restaurant
After closing time they'd give us almost anything we want
I never cared that Joey Keys was slow
Though he couldn't read or write too well
We'd talk all night long
Come, come on, come on
Whatcha gonna do with your life?
Come, come on, come on
Chasing sparks in the night
His old man said tomorrow
Is a ride that goes nowhere
But I'll pull some strings
Get blackbird wings
And break us out of here
Hey Joey, come on tell me 'bout your dreams
Tell me all the sights you're gonna see
Tell me who you're gonna be
Hey Joey, we're gonna kiss the girls goodnight
Sometimes you gotta stand and fight
It'll be all right
We gonna find a better life
See, Joe was three years younger tot he day
Acted like a little brother, but became my ball and chain
I met this girl named Rhonda, she fell for me
She said, "I might learn to like him,
But love ain't built for free."
Hey Joey, come on tell me 'bout your dreams
Tell me all the sights you're gonna see
Tell me who you're gonna be
Hey Joey, we're gonna kiss the girls goodnight
Sometimes you gotta stand and fight
It'll be all right
Hey Joey
News gets around this fading neighborhood
The old man lost his restaurant, he drinks more then he should
Its time for Joey Keys to do some good
Pick the lock off our lives
Like we always said we would
Hey Joey, come on tell me bout your dreams
Tell me all the sights you're gonna see
Tell me who you're gonna be
Hey Joey, we're gonna kiss the girls goodnight
You gotta stand and fight
It'll be all right
We gonna find a better life
Find a better life
Find a better life
Uh huh, uh huh
Come, come on, come on
Whatcha gonna do with your life?
Come, come on, come on
Chasing sparks in the night
Tell the old man its tomorrow
And we're off to find somewhere
Well I'll pull those strings,
Get blackbird wings to guide us out of here
Some would say he was bad

This song is so dedicated, although, as far as I've been told, not actually about any of the Bon Jovi guys. I think that the 'singer' chose Joey over Rhonda, cause he meant that much to him.
It's so cool with bands that write their songs like books, and have special peolpe who come back in many songs. Bon Jovi has Tommy, Gina and Joey. It's like the poems from the 17th-18th century..
This is definitely one of Jovi's best. A brilliant story of friendship and loyalty no matter what. They're always criticised but I think under-rated as writers. Always have been.

who is joey based on anyway? he's even mentioned in wild in the streets. like tommy and gina seem to be based on jon and dorothea, atleast in livin' on a prayer, cos that song comes across as being autobiographical... then is joey also based on some actual person, or is he just a figment of bon jovi imagination?
I really, really love this song, it used to make me cry real hard :). Anyone think it's the same Joey mentioned in Wild In The Streets?
i think this song is sooooooo gay.
