Vehicles & Animals Lyrics

It's the simple things like the robots Stevie G draws
And the ease with which we seem to pull those tricks
There are moments of escape for every one of us
And the beauty in the times that we create
I saw you smiling
And I need my vehicles and animals
And I will be alright
Take me back to 1979 so I can find my open eyes

He can play all by himself for many hours
I have never seen a kid who's so content
There is nothing from the outside that can touch him
Cos he's just learning how to be alone with one
I saw you smiling
And I need my vehicles and animals
And I will be alright
Take me back to 1979 so I can find my open eyes

Lying down on my bed
I just got another kick to the head
Oh yeah, you're a part of me
Yet another branch on the family tree
Salt on my fingers, salt in my cuts
Salt on my face and salt in my guts
It's been a battle but we've come through OK
Stop what you're doing and play...

Cos we've got our vehicles and animals
So we're gonna be alright
There's no need for us to go back in time
Because we've found our open eyes

We've got our vehicles and animals
So we're gonna be alright

Well the minute I heard this song it reminded me instantly of my bro who is autistic and "he can play all by himself for many hours...there is nothing from the outside that can touch him". the third verse hits me hard when i think about how someone i love so much will always be so absent even though they are "a part of me". and needless to say there have been some 'battles'! oh, and he spent his life up to the age of about 6 lining up toy cars and animals around the edge of whichever room he was in...it felt really spooky when I first made these links!

...oh and watching my youngest cousin (younger than my bro), coincidently called steven gerrard(!) grow up and learn to speak whilst my brother remained a two/three year old really brought it all home.

that's just what this song means to me!

I'm really not sure why i like this, it SHOULD be awful. in truth both the music and lyrics are naff, but i dunno, its a totally mesmerising track to listen to, because it just works. fantastically at that too. It doesnt really start particually positively this track i dont think, that might seem weird, perhaps 'There are moments of escape for every one of us And the beauty in the times that we create' might display a kind of frustration generally. Things change in the world, and perhaps have since 1979, and perhaps this is what its trying to say here, cos by the end we get: 'There's no need for us to go back in time Because we've found our open eyes ' naimely, things have changed again, possibly for the better. Vehicles and animals, perhaps this is a metaphor for ways of dealing with life, which were perhaps more noticable or easier to digest in the past. although, something changes, love? life? work? to make the present easier to control or deal with. Perhaps i'm too far reading into this.. as i say, i really dont know why i like this. But this IS fantastic.

I saw an interview with the lead singer a while back, in which he explained that the song was about his youth, when he was growing up (in 1979), and about a kid who was playing with his toys, (with his toy vehicles and animals), and about being perfectly content. Ever since I heard that it's ruined what was otherwise one of my favourite tracks ever.

Good lyric subject, everythings simple when your a kid, but when your eyes open up as an adult the worlds amuch bigger and mostly scarier place than it was. Didnt know that he grew up with Steven Gerrad though.

Aw man. As soon as i heard this song i KNEW what it was about. Because it totally describes me when I was little! Give me a couple of toys and i could amuse myself forEVER. This is a majorly comforting song... because it reminds me that I'm capable of being content within myself :)

joel pott (lead singer and one of the writers) is actually my 2nd cousin, and i'm like, 99% sure the Stevie mentioned in the first line is actually referring to my uncle 'Stevie Gee' who's an artist! look him up, he's got some amazing work.
