I first heard this song in late 2002 on satellite radio.
The meaning:
The first verse is the only one that starts with “You” meaning his former lover. The first verse and open line are his confessions of guilt. He questions his, and our, perspective by asking “do the colors of the rainbow look the same to everyone?” He admits that the relationship and he lacked a destination. “You could follow me for weeks…“ He then states that he now realizes the value the relationship had, but can only realize it in retrospect. “Sometimes….”
His dream refers to his realization that he would rather have a real relationship with a worthy woman “Married to the Queen” instead of a fantasy that could never be real. “Madonna; took a shine to me”
He sings of the deaths of other singers. This illustrates death, the passage of time and, most importantly, his maturation.
He realizes that he did not invest enough in his relationship because he was distracted by other things “Busy finding answers”. He realizes that he did care enough about this other person to have considered marriage. He also realizes that he allowed life to overwhelm him and never did find the courage to change his situation. He realizes that he can only have this relationship in nostalgia and in a song…he uses his songs and music as a coping mechanism.
He has learned and grown from this experience but he still whishes for the good thing he had with his old lover.

This song is amazing, i first heard a very different version while watching him play at T in the park last summer. After the lines about lennon, etc he sang "and the night Joe stummer died" it was amazing! he added lots of other lines to it aswell. the whle performance was superb!

I first heard this and was really disappointed. Now I love it. Its a grower.
I can't believe more people havn't posted stuff about this song. I think this is one of Badly Drawn Boy's best songs. When I feel crap I put this song on, crank up the volume and it always makes me feel better, or at least reassured; I think that's the message of the song.
so many great lines in one song! i like the subtle message too. when i heard the line about john lennon, i realized what a sad song it is: missing opportunities and mortality (sometimes it's hard to love someone till the day they are gone).
I think that this song is quite humble particularly with the title "You Were Right". In it he suggests that he has been wallowing about not achieving things in life in the way he hoped and his poor girlfriend has got really fed up with how pointless his misery seems. Anyhow, it seems that she has now made him see sense and that the most important thing in his life is being with her. He now realises that he wants to be happy and build a good life with her.
In other words, he is suggesting that this is what true love's about, having someone to help keep you down to earth and, of course, appreciating each other. I played this song a lot leading up to my wedding as it was particularly meaningful to me then.
Definitely my favourite Badly Drawn Boy song and quite possibly one of my favourite songs ever. I don't know, just something about the desperation and the ongoing story in the lyrics gets me. Plus just about every song is improved by a whistling solo.
I think it's about unrequited love, or if not completely unrequited, then him still being in love with a girl who has moved on because his life is so stagnant (something he realises along the way in the song). He still loves her but, like most of the other things in his life, he's never really gotten around to telling her that it's an absolute truth and asking her to marry him.
This song has such a beautiful flow to it. I just... love it. Completely.
