I'm An Agent Lyrics

Send in eyes
Thought’s of crashing, all those pictures
Send in thoughts of john the god

Send in dreams
Lovers on corners, clean my sheets
Your only chance is break the state

We are clean
Don’t ask, I’m an agent

Send in change
Secretaries, nothing more
You can be replaced you know

Send in chance
Bad conditions, talk of leaving
Talk of walking out on me

Send in you
Send in pain, send in lies
Send in words that I believe

Send in you
Just watch the face, your sure to see
Something, give this game away

Send in you
Get her out, get her out
Call me, just don’t say the name

Cover art for I'm An Agent lyrics by Gary Numan

Numan's practice of writing individual lyric lines he thought of and liked into a notebook then collecting them into a song later seems to have reached a culmination with this one. Virtually not one line has any meaning related to any other line ... stream of consciousness? More like stream of UNconsciousness!

The sheer SPEED and rhythm of the lyric saves it though, plus the tense palm-mute distorted guitar ... shades of his earlier Tubeway Army album stuff.

I still wonder who the hell "John the God" is, mind you.

"Secretaries, Nothing More: You Can Be Replaced You Know." What a line. This song rocks.

@Major Valor Read Numan's autobiography. He's referring to groupies if I remember correctly.

One of Gary Numan's big influences was the band Ultravox...especially their lead singer John Foxx. Listen to the album 'Systems Of Romance' and compare it to Numan's 'Replicas', and you'll see what I mean. Foxx left Ultravox in 1979 going solo. Check out his 1980 debut album Metamatic.
It's rumored that 'John The God' is a referrence to John Foxx.
In the John Foxx song Miles Away he states - "And There's a new man at the egde of me", which is said to be about Gary Numan.

I heard before that the song is probably referring to problems with Beggar's Banquet, more specifically, a broken relationship with a woman who worked there.

Banging Earworm.

I concur entirely with m'Learn'd colleague Mansion's assessment.

It is, for me, the chaos of a troubled mind.

Troubled by being 'an Agent'? We've all met 'em.

Folk who fantasise that the are in charge of some 'situation'... Like their lives...for example. Usually supported by a drink or substance problem.

Busy? Yes. Stressed? Yes. Enjoying The Fruits of Their Labours? Possibly. Coping? Not. Crashing? Yep, slowly. I think that's Gazzas point.
