Eclipse Lyrics

Call everyone to arms
We'll fill the heavens
With the poisoned dreams of man
Call everyone to arms
We forged these weapons
With the strength of our own hands

We shot the sun from the sky
Apollo dead at our feet
We wander lost in the rye
And gather 'round in the street

For centuries we watched the sky
And burned to bridge the great divide

Call everyone to arms
We'll fill the heavens
With the poisoned dreams of man
Call everyone to arms
We forged these weapons
With the strength of our own hands

Eclipse the body with stones
And lay him down with the rest
I smile when I am alone
And shed a tear for the press

For centuries we watched the sky
And burned to bridge the great divide
We dug the body up
We drank his golden blood
And light shone from our eyes
But it was not enough
And we still dream of deicide

For centuries we watched the sky
We burned to bridge the great divide
But now we burn with power and pride

Thrice, bar Teppei, are all Christians. This is reflected in most of Dustin's lyrics; especially in this song (the reason for Eclipse being left off the album when it was released is becuase the label thought it's lyrics were overtly spiritual). The lyrics, therfore, for this song are about men who thought that they could live without God/Gods to the extent that they thought they would be able to kill their God (call everyone to arms). Furthermore they wanted to themselves become Gods (we'll fill the heavens). Men are so proud of their weapons (WE forged these weapons with the strength of OUR own hands). The chorus shows how men cut themselves off from their God (shooting God from the sky, Apollo lying dead at their feet). This did not have the desired effect though and they are damned to being left without a God (we wander lost in the rye). Men are then left wishing for God to return to them but God simply takes their lives and lets them burn (in hell?) to "bridge the great divide", i.e. the rift between the men and their God. The next chorus shows how men try to replace their God with idols (eclipse the body with stones) and treat their God who they deserted as they would any mortal (lay him down with the rest). The next lines serve to highlight how sometimes men wear different masks in private and in public (smile when alone, shed tear for press). This could be symbolic of men serving God when its suits them. The outro tells of men who try to reclaim their old God by "drinking his golden blood" and for a while they are satisfied, but all too soon they have forgotten what life without God is like and dream once again of Deicide (it was not enough). josh

This song generally talks about the Tower of Babel. Most of the interpretations here are right, just connect them with this tale and you'll get the point. I'm not but but this may also have references to Lewis' That Hideous Strength.

Does anybody know if Dustin based this song on a book? I would like to read more into it but I don't have the greatest knowledge of literature. This song is haunting, I am just captivated by it. Same with Motion Isn’t Meaning. You can just hear the passion in Dustin’s voice in both of these songs.

I'm kinda getting a Jesus Christ vibe from this...the part about digging the body up and drinking his golden blood. And then "deicide" refers to the killing of a divine being...AKA-Christ.

i think its about how as a society we've turned our backs on faith in a greater power. because its almost becoming taboo to bring up religion and faith anywhere

No. I will tell you what this song means.

It means that man is goin to end the world."We shot the sun from the sky" and With all that people still expect to have their dreams met when they die, even though some people don't deserve it.They only care for themselves. NOt days, not years, but for centureies the same cycle continues and everyone falls into the great divide

I thought it was Riley who isn't Christian?

Cover art for Eclipse lyrics by Thrice

Yea, riley is the one whos non-christian, which is ironic seeing as how HE IS GOD ON THE DRUMS!

But i think this song is about mans strugle against a greater power, "we shot the sun from the sky", kill what we dont wanna let control us "we dug the body up, and drank the golden blood, and light shone from our eyes, but it was not enough, for we still dream of DEICIDE" clearly, we took its power and still it was not enough, mankind simply cannot accept control, it has to be the higher power, thats our biggest problem, ohh and "i smile when i am alone, and shed a tear for the brass" it shows how we sin, with the hopes that we can just redeem ourselfs in the end, thats the thought that kills us, christian or not, you can realate to that.

Eclipse the body with stones And lay him down with the rest I smile when I am alone And shed a tear for the press

when he says 'Eclipse the body with stones' its like they all threw stones at god and like stoned him to death, they eclipsed this bright being with stones."And lay him down with the rest I smile when I am alone" When ther alone there really happy about the deed they have done to satisfy there greed. "And shed a tear for the press" and they are happy in private, but when asked about it they act like they show remorse(sp?) for what they have done and 'shed a tear'
