Thrice, bar Teppei, are all Christians. This is reflected in most of Dustin's lyrics; especially in this song (the reason for Eclipse being left off the album when it was released is becuase the label thought it's lyrics were overtly spiritual).
The lyrics, therfore, for this song are about men who thought that they could live without God/Gods to the extent that they thought they would be able to kill their God (call everyone to arms). Furthermore they wanted to themselves become Gods (we'll fill the heavens). Men are so proud of their weapons (WE forged these weapons with the strength of OUR own hands).
The chorus shows how men cut themselves off from their God (shooting God from the sky, Apollo lying dead at their feet). This did not have the desired effect though and they are damned to being left without a God (we wander lost in the rye). Men are then left wishing for God to return to them but God simply takes their lives and lets them burn (in hell?) to "bridge the great divide", i.e. the rift between the men and their God.
The next chorus shows how men try to replace their God with idols (eclipse the body with stones) and treat their God who they deserted as they would any mortal (lay him down with the rest). The next lines serve to highlight how sometimes men wear different masks in private and in public (smile when alone, shed tear for press). This could be symbolic of men serving God when its suits them.
The outro tells of men who try to reclaim their old God by "drinking his golden blood" and for a while they are satisfied, but all too soon they have forgotten what life without God is like and dream once again of Deicide (it was not enough).
