Face In The Sand Lyrics
Everybody's waiting for something to happen
Everybody's waiting for something to see
Lunatics waiting for bigger disasters
Everyone's waiting for news on TV
Winding lives at the end of the spiral
Waiting dictators with their next big thrill
Everyone's looking, but no one is listening
Everybody wants to be in at the kill
I wait for the signs, they tell me true
I see the signs of the end of time
Everyone's searching, but nothing's revealing
Everyone's looking for the reason why
Everyone's hoping for life everafter
Everyone's looking at death from the sky
Everyone's nightmares are going to happen
Everybody's ripping the mask from their eyes
Everyone's praying but no one's believing
Everyone's heroes tell everyone's lies
I wait for the signs, they tell me true
I see the signs of the end
[Chorus:]
So I watch and I wait
And I pray for an awnser
An end to the strife and the world's misery
But the end never came
And we're digging the graves
And we're loading the guns for the kill
Can the end be at hand?
Is the face in the sand
Future memory of our tragedy?
Can the end be at hand?
Is the face in the sand
Future memory of our tragedy?
[Repeat chorus, last verse]
Everybody's waiting for something to see
Lunatics waiting for bigger disasters
Everyone's waiting for news on TV
Waiting dictators with their next big thrill
Everyone's looking, but no one is listening
Everybody wants to be in at the kill
I see the signs of the end of time
Everyone's looking for the reason why
Everyone's hoping for life everafter
Everyone's looking at death from the sky
Everybody's ripping the mask from their eyes
Everyone's praying but no one's believing
Everyone's heroes tell everyone's lies
I see the signs of the end
So I watch and I wait
And I pray for an awnser
An end to the strife and the world's misery
But the end never came
And we're digging the graves
And we're loading the guns for the kill
Is the face in the sand
Future memory of our tragedy?
Can the end be at hand?
Is the face in the sand
Future memory of our tragedy?

The song laments the state of mankind: the hypocrisy of the modern era, the inevitable Apocalypse, and man's generally self-destructive nature.
I believe Nicko McBrain had a part in writing this song, and I'm pretty sure he's a Christian. Now, the actual line is not "I see the signs of the end of time," but "I see the signs of the end times," "end times" being what the time period discussed in Revalations is often refered to as. There are those who say signs of such times are evident... Whether you're religious or not it makes you think.
@emmerder I think it was"New Frontier" Nikko co-wrote, about cloning and stuff. This one's credited to Dickinson, who tends to take influence from Christianity, occultism, and anywhere else he sees fit, so who knows?

Oops, my mistake. Nicko had a part in New Frontiir, not Face in the Sand.
It was also brought about in part by the media coverage of the September 11th attacks and ensuing War On Terror stuff. A lot of it is about sensationalizing suffering and evil.
Yea, in essence this song is about the war on Iraq.
very koooool I love the way it starts yeah i say war in Iraq. the lyrics kick ass My favorite parts makes me feel ashamed "everybody's waiting for news on TV" "Everybody wants to be in at the kill"
"Everyone's heroes tell everyone's lies" I wonder who these 2 heros are! :D
a brilliant song, one of my favorites
"Everybody's waiting for something to happen Everybody's waiting for something to see Lunatics waiting for bigger disasters Everyone's waiting for news on TV"
"Winding lives at the end of the spiral Waiting dictators with their next big thrill Everyone's looking, but no one is listening Everybody wants to be in at the kill" -to me, this verse is saying that democracy is failing. look at the war on iraq, alot of the uk population didnt want to go to war, yet the primeminister was acting like a dictator and didnt listen.
"Everyone's searching, but nothing's revealing Everyone's looking for the reason why Everyone's hoping for life everafter Everyone's looking at death from the sky "
i think this is a song about human corruption and the death of us all.
This song is a brilliant one; it’s doesn’t have unusual metaphors or anything, it just makes a few comments on society. I found this one particularly good: “Everyone’s looking at death from the sky” : This is so true of us. When we hear about a bombing or something we go “Aww, that’s bad” but deep down we don’t really care; we kid ourselves into thinking we know death when we really don’t have all that a close relationship with it, just because we see a picture of people suffering.
One more thing: “Everyone’s waiting for news on TV” : Remember recently when crime rates in Iran dropped when their leader fell ill because supposedly everyone was inside trying to find out the latest on the guy? A perfect example of this line in society.
Good o' Bruce, not making things obvious or easy to work out :D
Is the song is about Some near-Apocolyptical war? Maybe "I wait for the signs, they tell me true I see the signs of the end"
"the end never came And we're digging the graves And we're loading the guns for the kill" This seems to Be about how when you thihnk everything is going to end, It just gets worse and worse. (Check 'Fates Warning' - "Or They the lucky ones that are Taken away")
This song is a toughie, It could be about the War in Iraq, It could be apocolyptic, (23:58 esque), but it has a very dark feel to it. I always seem to invisage that bit from Terminator 2(i think) With the scorched playground after the Nukes. Maybe that is "the Sand", the remains of a nuclear holocaust. Thats just how i see it anyway ;)
Im not sure if this is true are not but I heard Nicko uses a double bass drum in this song.
To me this song is about the media controlling things.
