Iron Maiden – Face In The Sand Lyrics 20 years ago
Oops, my mistake. Nicko had a part in New Frontiir, not Face in the Sand.

Into Eternity – Beginning Of The End Lyrics 20 years ago
The singer actually messed up and forgot the lines but they liked it so they kept it.

This song has such a freaking cool solo. Though the lyrics are pretty weak in my opinion.

Iron Maiden – Face In The Sand Lyrics 20 years ago
I believe Nicko McBrain had a part in writing this song, and I'm pretty sure he's a Christian. Now, the actual line is not "I see the signs of the end of time," but "I see the signs of the end times," "end times" being what the time period discussed in Revalations is often refered to as. There are those who say signs of such times are evident... Whether you're religious or not it makes you think.

Children of Bodom – Trashed, Lost & Strungout Lyrics 20 years ago
Have you people listened to Something Wild or Hatebreeder? This song is incredibly weak, not only in comparison to them but to metal in general. This is Bodom sans everything good about them.

And the word is tHrash.

Children of Bodom – Bed of Razor Lyrics 20 years ago
I got the same impression as darkdavo. Kind of a tragic Romeo and Juliet kind of story.

A couple lines throw a few curve-balls, which may have just been Alexi not caring if it made sense, but one could say that the couple in question either had relationship problems or external conflict, and so Alexi is leading her to where it doesn't matter.

Kreator – Enemy Of God Lyrics 20 years ago
Funny how people can interpret things so different, huh?

The way I see it, it touches on the hypocrisy of those who claim God as their master but defy His will, using the self-assigned title of believer to achieve more power for their conquest against humanity, but such a system cannot work and will eventually collapse in on itself, at which point holiness will be so degraded that it will have ceased to hold any power.

Overkill – The Years of Decay Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is like if Children of the Damned was good...

This song's lyrics seem Hamletesque to me in that at the end of Halmet, he realizes that what is supposed to happen is what is going to happen, and there's nothing he can do about it. According to this song, Blitz's life was such that he couldn't reach his dreams, but he's man enough to accept that crappy or not, this is life, and if it wears you down, then you will die worn down.

Kreator – Coma Of Souls Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's basically Kreator explaining basic problems with humanity that compound as time progresses. I think the "soul" is the human race's morality (or even common sense) that is shut out by greed, like it being in a coma.

Dismember – Of Fire Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't think it's just insanity, but a mental callous formed, without which the mind would collapse in on itself.

Burzum – War Lyrics 20 years ago
Anyone else notice how similar the keyboard in "Paschendale" by Iron Maiden is to the main riff of this song? I think it's entirely coincidence as it's fairly simple, but I still find it interesting since the two bands are so different.

And Varg isn't mental, he's a misguided and stubborn genius. Not that I advocate his murder or church burnings at all. I think it's tragic that those are what he put his mind to.

Burzum – Feeble Screams from Forests Unknown Lyrics 20 years ago
That would make sense for Varg, considering how strongly he believes in ancient traditions and customs.

Metallica – Disposable Heroes Lyrics 20 years ago
Anyone else find it funny that this is what Ulrich did to Hetfield? This was one of the last songs that got written before Metallica was neutered.

Think about it. When these bands got started, they were all pretty young. I mean, Death Angel had like 12-year old members. Many of them lacked technical skill but they made up for it in emotion. For a while in the 80's, the thrash scene was glorified, but once the trend ended, many either disbanded or sold out. In the middle of the 90's, what did thrash metal have to show for all its hard work the decade before? Overkill, and... yeah, just Overkill.

If you look at early Metallica lyrics, they were pretty gung-ho about just being metal and rocking out. Of course, Dave Mustaine may have had a lot to do with that, and since he didn't follow orders, they kicked him out (of course the most obvious rebuttal to this point is the Risk album, but anyway...).

This song prophecized what was to come for the band. The next Metallica was ...And Justice For All, which had the technical skill that I mentioned had previously been lacking in thrash in general, but compared to Ride The Lightning, it was damn boring. By the time the Black Album came out, they were no longer a thrash metal band. Now, I personally think it was a fine album, but you can't argue that Metallica still felt the glory of the old days.

I suppose there's a ray of hope in the dismal lyrics of this song contained within the metaphor I applied to it in that a bunch of bands are reuniting and releasing new albums. But then again the only ones able to do it as well as they used to are Maiden and Motorhead (and I haven't heard the new Priest). Looking forward to the new Dark Angel and Sadus though.

Exodus – Piranha Lyrics 20 years ago
I honestly am not sure if Exodus cared enough to craft a metaphor such as this, but I think the school of piranhas is comperable to certain metal scenes at the time. The metalheads were often at war with the punk rockers, and each stuck to their own kind. Since I was born in 88 I couldn't tell you what it was really like, but I'm led to believe that if you pissed off one metalhead you had a whole pack of them after you soon enough, especially in the San Fransisco Bay Area.

The part that throws me off is the reference to Loki. I don't know where that would fit in there.

But this song kicks enough ass for it not to matter anyway.
