I'm Losing You

It's about Yoko. During the Double Fantasy sessions, he was in Dakota with Sean, and Yoko was remaining in New York, refusing to come. He was trying to ring her, but often she would not answer.

This song's not political. The cross line is a reference to the analogy "It's my cross to bear" or any variation thereof. It's like holding a grudge. I love the guitar in this song, and the count-in with the snare hit.

I wonder if this song could be about Paul or another friend that John felt he was losing. It describes exactly how I feel about a friend that I'm sort of in the process of losing...

He's losing someone and is helpless to stop that loss. He hurt this person in the past, and that's part of why he's losing them, but he just wants to move on from that. He's aware that he reminds the person of "all that bad stuff", but what can he do about it? Band-aid solutions don't work, pretending it didn't happen doesn't work. This song could be a plea to that person, sort of saying let's just move on already. But to me it feels like he's just venting his frustration -- somebody he values is slipping away from him and even though he's tried, he can't seem to do anything to keep that person around.

That's just my take on it, though, and maybe it's just because of the situation I'm in that I am seeing it this way.

As I heard it. Yoko kept sending John away, possibly because she was going through heroin withdrawals and didn't want him to know, possibly because she was having an affair or maybe their relationship was just too on the rocks for her to bear. Either way she controlled his schedule and he was angry that she wouldn't even answer the phone to him sometimes. I reckon that the hurting her that he mentions is when he banged that friend in front of her at the Nixon election victory party. I bet she never forgave him for that and no doubt there were other stressful times when John acted out like that. He was probably losing her love.

I thought it was a love song but it turns out to be a political song. Imagine what gave it away? "do you still have to carry thet cross? I still cant figure out the first line. Help meeee oooooo (fade)....
