Homonculus

This song is riddled with idiosyncracies, the only thing I can do is give the denotation of the word "homunculus."

Homunculus was a theoretical being that was inside of sperm, in the past they believed that sperm contained a very small fully developed human and it just grew over time. The term originated from the alchemist Paracelsus who claimed that he had a little man who did work for him (which he created by putting together a bag of bones, sperm, skin fragments and hair from any animal you wanted it to be a hybrid of. This was to be laid in the ground surrounded by horse manure for forty days, at which point the embryo would form.)

Today the term is used in a number of ways to describe systems that are thought of as being run by a "little man" inside. For instance, the homunculus continues to be considered as one of the major theories on the origin of consciousness, that there is a part (or process) in the brain whose purpose is to be "you". The homunculus is often invoked in cybernetics as well, for similar reasons.

Stu: Some of the songs off Knife Play are about different members of Xiu Xiu. How do they react to that?

Jaime: Actually only Homoculus is about Yvonne. Dr Troll (Lauren's nick name) is just named after her as is Sad Cory o Grapher, being named after Cory but not about him. That song is on a 5rc comp. Yvonne has really only mentioned it to me in so far as she said it was too weird for her to play it live, although we did for a couple of early shows. That was actually the first Xiu Xiu song. I hope she likes that song but I have been afraid to ask. Homoculus is about that she is a good friend and can deal with it and be there when I go nuts and act like an idiot.

Probably one of the best Xiu Xiu songs ever.

Not surprising that it's their FIRST one. They've definitely not gone downhill.

I have a bit of a problem with finding out the true meaning now. This song just feels too intense and emotional to be just about having a good friend. Mainly it's too dark, and I hate to use that word to describe a Xiu Xiu song. That's just how I feel about it.
