Less Than You Think Lyrics

Your mind's a machine
It's deadly and dull
It's never been still and its will
Has never been free

Lightly tapping
A high-pitched drum

As your spine starts to shine
You shiver at your soul
A fist so clear and climbing
Punches a hole
In the sky
So you can see
For yourself
If you don't believe me

There's so much less
To this than you think

It's almost gone
The night is dissolving
In a cup God lifts
To toast the lightning

Lightly tapping
It's high-pitched and it hums

Your spine starts to shine
And you shiver at your soul
A fist so clear and climbing
Punches a hole
In the sky
So you can see
For yourself
If you don't believe me

There's so much less
To this than you think

while listening to the feedback for the full 12 minutes in the car once, a friend suggested it's really the sound of a ghost being born.

I think the first part of the song is a statement about the belief systems around organized religions. That people just blindly accept ideas without ever really thinking freely about them for themselves. The existence of heaven is something that people believe because that's what they've been taught and they just accept it blindly without ever really thinking about it or questioning it. "Your mind's a machine, it's deadly and dull. It's never been still and it's will has never been free".

The narrator would like to punch a hole in the sky so you can see for yourself that there isn't anything there. There is no heaven...it's just life here on earth and that's it. There's isn't much more to it. "There's so much less to this than you think"

I believe the second part of the song is, as others have said, a replication of a migraine.

Great post! You said almost everything I was going to say. Right on! There was one thing I interpreted differently, though.

"Your spine starts to shine And you shiver at your soul A fist so clear and climbing Punches a hole In the sky So you can see For yourself If you don't believe me"

I think the "spine starts to shine and you shiver at your soul" line is the dawning of a realization that there's likely no god. The "fist so clear and climbing" is that realization, and to me, I think the "fist" is reason....

I think that these lyrics are misprinted. The lyrics reading: "It's almost gone The night is dissolving In a cup God lifts To toast the lightning"

should be switched with

"Your mind's a machine It's deadly and dull It's never been still and its will Has never been free "

Nevertheless, this song is beautiful.

I read an article where Jeff commented on how he found it ironic and funny that a song entitle "less than you think" is 12 minutes long.
Honestly, I think that it was supposed to make everyone conjure up lengthy lyrical interpretations when the song is really about the way instructmental music makes you feel.
Tweedy later said that he wanted his music to inspire his listeners to stay true to their own opinions and to incite action...and that this song should incite listeners to get up and turn it off if they got sick of listening to feedback.

That feedback gets way eerie if you sit through the whole thing.

the feedback is supposed to represent the migraine headaches tweedy had while he was addicted to painkillers and whatnot. i think it's not too shabby, it can be tedious at times though.
