All dressed down to catch a whiff of the buzz
Smells like the death of the last great cause
But you & I we’ve been through that and that is not our fate
Give my face to the back of your head
Loyal in your shadow
Yeah yeah yeah
Broken accidental stars
Do lawyers have lawyers?
Do landlords have landlords? we’re wondering
One more cheap suit in the loop, more chlorine in the pool
The blonde dolls smiling behind us
Say, one day you’ll be just like us
All dressed up to catch a glimpse of the list
We’ve seen some success, it looks like a camero
Yeah yeah yeah
Broken accidental stars
Do lawyers have lawyers?
Do landlords have landlords? we’re wondering
One more cheap suit in the loop, more chlorine in the pool
The blonde dolls smiling behind us
Say, one day you’ll be just like us
Calling from the next hotel – can you put me on the list?
Who we are now we will always be- the best haircuts are taken
Calling from the next hotel – can you put me on the list?
Who we are now we will always be- the best haircuts are taken

"Yeah yeah yeah Broken accidental stars" I guess no one else got this part. But they are jsut referring to four other bands. Yeah yeah yeahs, Broken social scene, KC accidental, and Stars. Metric moved into the same loft as the Yeah yeah yeahs at one point. Emily Haines, the lead singer of Metric was once a part of Broken Social Scene as well as KC Accidental. And she and John Shaws are friend with the members of Stars
Ah, brilliant. Never would have gotten that

Oh thank you! I was struggling a little with that line but now it makes perfect sense!

I agree with contusion, but I also think when she says, "But you and I have been through that and that is not our fate/ Give my face to the back of your head/ loyal in your shadow/ yeah yeah yeah/ broken accidental stars," she is saying how she and her friends (and previous projects) are loyal to who they are as musicians, and it will never be their fates to be blonde, mainstream dolls. And she feels this way even though they've been tempted by having "seen some success." She compares that "success" of getting into the parties and having publicity to a Camaro. She's saying she's been tempted to dress flashy and buy expensive things to show off and be noticed, but instead she has stayed true to who she is, and she won't sell out like so many others have.
I love this song so much. Another one of my favorites.
And another pretty self-explanitory one.
My favorite line of the whole song, "The best haircuts are taken."
I FRICKING LOVE THIS SONG!!! my fav lines .. "Do lawyers have lawyers? Do landlords have landlords? we’re wondering One more cheap suit in the loop, more chlorine in the pool The blonde dolls smiling behind us Say, one day you’ll be just like us"
there asking questions i think
is music really repattive is it jsut about the fashion and the hair? and are we always guoing to be popular
Nicely done neatOne, you beat me to it, I was gonna mention that. :) This is an awesome song, as soon as I figured out the lyrics (admit it, it sounds pretty confusing the first time you hear it) it became one of my favourites of theirs. It's very cheeky, like so many songs from Metric. I love the line "We've seen some success, it looks like a Camaro".
"All dressed down to catch a whiff of the buzz Smells like the death of the last great cause But you & I we’ve been through that and that is not our fate Give my face to the back of your head Loyal in your shadow"
I don't really get this part of the song... What does she mean by "Give my face to the back of your head"? Anyone have any ideas?, because I'm really curious as to what it means!
"Give my face to back of your head"...either she's behind someone or it's just a metaphor for the person not paying attention to her

I think that the "give my face to the back of your head" is basically wanting to give up and maybe perhaps become like everyone else? that's the feeling i get from when she also says "loyal in your shadow." i think this could be about the going to shows, wanting to be put on the guest list, perhaps. or just the music industry in general. perhaps trying to get signed, or something like that. it definitly seems like that. but she is talking to someone else, like someone who she is trying to make the scene with, telling them "that is not our fate", and that they weren't made for being famous and getting onto guest lists. or maybe she means that she doesn't want to try, and that it's unimportant. also because in this first line she says "all dressed down" like, they have just been out to se what is going on, not trying to get onto the guest lists now. so she just wants to give up and become like everybody else, no longer wants to try to be different with haircuts because all the best ones are taken.
then she is asking questions, like, because this is all elite and whatever, do lawyers have laywers? think this could be referring to what do the people that go to these things and get on guest lists, what do they conform to?
i'm not that sure on the verse. "one more cheap suit in the loop" could be referring to numerous outfits people buy to go to clubs in. "more chlorine" in the pool gives the effect of like, i don't know.. perhaps chemicals? could be relating to drugs, not sure about that though. "the blonde doll smiling behind us, says one day you'll be just like us" i love this bit, she says it in such a sarcastic voice. obviously referring to the amount of dolls and how everyone appears perfect in the music industry. the second verse " all dressed up to catch a glimpse of the list" they've dressed up, the opposite to the first line where they were 'dressed down'. they've seen some success, there getting there nearly to be 'on the list'.
the last lines are the best. "calling from the next hotel" maybe she is callingbecause she doesn't want to be seen begging, desperate to be on the list. even though she is "who we are now we will always be" perhaps trying to convince herself, although she carries on ringing around trying to get onto the list. "the best haircuts are taken" when she sings this it sounds like the person on the phone to her is saying it. like, rejecting her ? don't know. may be about guilt from feeling the need to want to fit in with these scenes, or i've probably gotten it completely wrong. good song nonetheless
Oh, and I forgot to say that I'm not sure what she means by "Give my face to the back of your head."
And I also forgot to say that I think that throughout the rest of the song she is being sarcastic and criticizing today's music scene.
But that's just me.
Hahaha. Sorry, one more thing. When she says, "Who we are now we will always be/ The best haircuts are taken," I think she's being sarcastic again, using not having the "right" hair and looks because the good cuts are already taken as an excuse for why they aren't like the rest of the scene. I think it's really witty and funny.
