Walking In Memphis (Marc Cohn Cover) Lyrics
Put on my blue seude shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the delta blues
In the middle of a pouring rain
W.C. Handy
Won't you look down over me
'Cause I've got a first-class ticket
And I'm as blue as a boy can be
Chorus
Walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel
Saw the ghost of Elvis
Down on Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
And watched him walk right through
Now security they did not see him
They just hovered around his tomb
There's a pretty little thing
Waiting on the king
Down in the jungle room
Chorus
They've got catfish on the table
They've got gospel in the air
And Reverend Green be glad to see you
When you haven't got a prayer
You've got a prayer in Memphis
Now Muriel plays the piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
She said tell me are you a Christian
And I said Ma'am I am tonight
Chorus (x2)

I have no idea what this song means. Maybe he's singing about his connection with The King [Elvis]... and how... oh I don't know. Anyone care to explain?
I like this way more than Cohns version. kinda more upbeat.
This is all about Memphis (nooo wayy)
WC handy is a writer i think of blues music
I think Beale is a famous street strongly associated with music
I love this song, but i dont know why. It might be the catchy piano
I love this song. Some information about this song: W. C. Handy, also known as "the father of blues" and his band were the first black group to play the blues. The place where they played was on Beale street. Graceland was Elvis Presley's home. One of the rooms in his house was the jungle room, and around the end of his carrer, he tried to record his music there. Reverend Al Green was a soul singer and is famous in Memphis. Muriel, at the Hollywood Cafe, and Marc Cohn had a conversation when she was on one of her breaks, and then when she had to get back up on stage, she asked him to join her. She sang gospel music, and she asked him if he knew 'Amazing Grace', which is the gospel he's talking about in the song. An interesting thing that I found is that the Hollywood didn't serve catfish, yet he mentions that there's catfish on the table. Thats about all the information I was able to find on this song, but there's probably a lot more out there.
Honestly everytime this song comes on I just want to turn it up LOUD and sing along. It is great and catchy and has a story to it. The guys voice is awesome!
Beale Street is a famous street in Memphis that has all sorts of bars and a lot of bands play there. It's right in downtown Memphis. I really like this song, but I probably wouldn't get some of the things it says if I weren't a part time resident in Memphis...going to college there.
I believe this song is about him going through a spiritual awakening after seeing the ghost of Elvis go to the "Gates of Grace" (He's probably not talking about Graceland, but the literal Gates of Grace, three guesses were.) and he returns to the Hollywood for a dinner (Most likely) and they notice he's a musician and ask him to "do a little number" and since it was serving a Christian dinner (Because they only eat fish on Fridays during lent instead of meat)the woman playing the piano, Muriel, asks him if he's actually a Christian and he replies that he has been converted because of what he had actually recently seen, and he continues to sing, and since everyone else joins in at that point, they're all probably inspired by the story.
