Beautiful song. It's about a man who's away from home for a reason unknown, and it explain how he's feeling and how his family is responding to his absence. This also explains how much he loves his family, and how much they mean to him. Also, how he's saying that he'll always be there for them, no matter what the circumstances are. Wonderful <3

this is an aweosme song..and if you hae ever heard the version of the soldiers wives/kids/girfriends/fiancees and what not saying stuff to there loved ones it has a meaning to do with the armed forces...an aweosme version puts tears in my eyes every time i hear it..when my hubby left for deployment i played this along with a few others on the way home

This song could have alot of meanings

1. A man who wants to get in contact with his family while he is fighting in a war?

2. A long distance relationship and wanting to tell his family how much he cares for them he could also just be a step father who knows?

3. Or it could be neither, and just a dream of his that he wishes someone to care for him, a dream that he could love someone and be loved back, to have a family

I think it references someone who wants to console their kids, but they really aren't coming home. The line at the beginning, "Just to hear her say I love you one more time" implies that it will be the last time the speaker hears her say that. The speaker may be dead already or about to be killed. Maybe the speaker is already dead, which would make his/her spoken omnipresence a reality.

If you check the writing credits for this song you will see Richie is named! So this leads me to think the song is about him been on the road with the band & he is ringing his wife to tell her how much he loves her & the kids. The child doesn't understand and just says "Daddy, when ya comin' home". He explains by saying I'm their with you all the time, deep in your heart. Yes it can be about a long distance relationship or a truck driver. Hell it can be about lots of things but I'm just stating the obvious!

thi song really has a special meaning .....my uncle close as a dad was in a bad bad car accident awhile ago...he is paralyzed from the waistdown, he had extensive brain damage and was iffy if he would ever be the same if he lived....but by the grace of God he did, is the same man he was before, minus the use of his legs....here's where this song comes in...he was in the hospital for 7 months and every night when he talked to my aunt on the phone, he would hear the kids in the background and want to be with them soooo much...he missed his wife.....laying in the intensive care alone...this song made him cry when he still couldn't even speak....God is so good, he saved his life...i love you unc!!!

I love this song...it's given me so much inspiration in my writing. The words are just so beautiful. It makes me think of anyone that has to travel for a living (athlete/singer) and can't see their family. It's real sweet. Okay I'm done being emotional now. :)

one hell of a song my first dance with my girlfriend was to this song so this is especially close to this song and i am done about this.
