The Runaway Lyrics
If you ran to the end of the earth
I would catch you and you would be safe
If you fell down the well
I would bring you a rope and take all of the pain
All the pain, all the pain
That you hide from me everyday
If youre missing I will run away
I will build a path to you
If you're missing I will run away
because I find myself in you
If I woke up alone
I won't stop till I find you and you are with me
Cause by now, I know you better than you know yourself
And I know what you really need
What you need, or I need
But either way this is where you should be
Here with me, or I'll bleed,
So much that you wont believe
If you're missing I will run away
I will build a path to you
If you're missing I will run away
because I find myself in you
You better not, you better not run
You better not, you better not run
If you're missing I will run away
I will build a path to you
If you're missing I will run away
I will find you
I will find you
I will find you
I would catch you and you would be safe
If you fell down the well
I would bring you a rope and take all of the pain
That you hide from me everyday
I will build a path to you
If you're missing I will run away
because I find myself in you
I won't stop till I find you and you are with me
Cause by now, I know you better than you know yourself
And I know what you really need
But either way this is where you should be
Here with me, or I'll bleed,
So much that you wont believe
I will build a path to you
If you're missing I will run away
because I find myself in you
You better not, you better not run
I will build a path to you
If you're missing I will run away
I will find you
I will find you
I will find you

I may end up catching shit for this, but does this sound a bit... stalkerish? Or rather, obsessed, and not in the good way.
I mean, the language he uses makes it sound like he can't stand living without this girl, in an irrational sense:
"And I know what you really need What you need, or I need But either way this is where you should be
Here with me, or I'll bleed, So much that you wont believe"
It's like he's saying it's what she needs, but it's actually what he needs.
Still, it's a cool song.
I definitely agree with prayingmantis about the stalker part. It almost sounds like it's an abusive/overly controlling relationship or something. The lines "if you fell down a well, I would bring a rope and take all of the pain", to me, sound more like he's using it to hang him or herself with it instead of helping her back up. Like a "suicide is the only way to end the suffering" type of deal. I don't know if I'm making sense or if this is how the song's really supposed to be interpreted, but those are just my two cents.
Okay, so he's crazy. Thats what we've determined, and I agree. "If I woke up alone I won't stop till I find you and you are with me" - thats sooo stalkerish.
this song is fucking amazing, its not stalkerish! its explaining what someone means to you. andrew is amazing, he is not crazy. you guys are idiots.
When in doubt... go to sleep.
Yes, explaining in an incredibly obsessive way. Seriously. Listen to the words.
Andrew is amazing, yes. I'm aware. I've seen SoCo four times in the last nine months. That doesn't mean that it isn't about stalking someone. By your logic, "Me and the Moon" is about when Andrew was a woman and murdered someone. Which I don't think happened.
It does start pretty innocently. It took me quite a few listens before I picked up on it, but the obsessive angle is there. "You better not, you better not run"... hmm... a bit threatening...
"Cause by now, I know you better than you know yourself And I know what you really need What you need, or I need"
Very controlling, very "I know what's best for you".
Don't just dismiss it because Andrew is such an amazing guy or whatever. Just because you write it doesn't mean you've done it or felt it. Seriously.
haha.... very well said.. ok yes i see the stalking bit.. but i think moreso than that, he poetically and lyrically showed how much he needs this girl in his life. it seems like that moment of desperation when someone is threatening to leave, and that initial panic, realizing that you are nothing without the other person. i think he chose these "stalkerish" lyics to show how desperately he needs this person... regardless-- awesome song and cd!

First of all, let me make you aware that Andrew McMahon didn't write this song: Josh Partington (guitarist) wrote this.
i love this song. but i do see where you guys say its stalkerish. but he's just basically trying to get his point across that he really needs this person in his life, and he definitely has an interesting way of saying that.
well done, great song. amazing album. soco rocks.
hmmm... maybe a bit stalkerish, but not much. like, i agree with stuck in sunday... just tryin to get his point across man.
soco rocks my frickin sox!
