Sunrise, sunrise
Looks like mornin' in your eyes
But the clock's held 9:15 for hours
Sunrise, sunrise
Couldn't tempt us if it tried
'Cause the afternoon's already come and gone

And I said
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
To you

Surprise, surprise
Couldn't find it in your eyes
But I'm sure it's written all over my face
Surprise, surprise
Never something I could hide
When I see we made it through another day

Then I say
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
To you

Now the night
Will throw its cover down
On me again
Ooh, and if I'm right
It's the only way
To bring me back

Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
To you
Hoo, ooh, yeah
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
To you

I love this song! It has such an uplifting melody and Norah Jone's vocals are so peaceful and beautiful. But I actually think that this song is about a couple falling apart. Here's my lyrical analysis lol "Sunrise, sunrise Looks like mornin' in your eyes But the clock's held 9:15 for hours"

She is saying that even though its at night he has that "morning tired" look in his eyes as if he were exhausted or defeated.

"Sunrise, sunrise Couldn't tempt us if it tried 'Cause the afternoon's already come and gone"

Sunrise being symbolic for a happy new beginning, or when they first were together, doesn't tempt them because they've come too far to start over.

"And I said Who... Do you Surprise?" Surprise, couldn't find it in your eyes But I'm sure it's written all over my face"

She's attempting to have a conversation with him, addressing the problem. But he doesn't care, he keeps a blank, tired stare on his face, while she has all the emotion.

"Surprise, surprise Never something I could hide When I see we've made it through another day"

This was actually the line that made me start to think this song was about a couple falling apart. She is saying that this has been going on for a while and that it is suprising that they have last so long like this.

And I said Woo... do you

Now the night Will throw its cover down On me again Ooh and if I'm right It's the only way To bring me back

Basically she goes to sleep and they start it all over again. The pleasant melody of the song and the sad lyrics is what gives this song its bittersweet, ironic feeling. I can def. relate.

    My Interpretation

This is one of the most beautiful romantic songs of all time….released in 2004 and I have just discovered it…9 years later…lol…it’s peaceful, sweet, melodious and utterly romantic...the singer has a beautiful voice… It’s about two lovers who are spending a weekend away alone in their room, snuggled in bed and are so madly, deeply & passionately in love with each other… beyond imagination…that just being with each other alone & uninterrupted makes them lose track of time and is the most beautiful feeling they’ve ever experienced.

I am blessed to experiencing exactly this right now as I write this When I get a full weekend with my girl it is like that…waking up and consciously pulling her back into my arms, going back to sleep, spending the mornings just holding each other. No rush to get up, being with each other is the only thing we need.

"Sunrise, sunrise Looks like morning in your eyes But the clock's held 9:15 for hours"

They've lost track of time...the last time she looked at the clock it was 9:15. She's so madly in love with him that it doesn't matter what the time actually is because time has disappeared, he is all that matters.

"Sunrise, sunrise Couldn't tempt us if it tried 'Cause the afternoon's already come and gone"

They've woken up after what was possibly a passionate night of love making and just laid there in bed snuggled in each other's arms all morning...all afternoon...probably making love again :)

"And I said ooh, ooh, ooh, to you"

She's being cute...probably sticking her tongue out like a little kid because this brings a rush of love from him and he just smothers her...which is exactly what she wants.

"Surprise, surprise Couldn't find it in your eyes But I'm sure it's written all over my face"

She's so taken aback by the overwhelming feelings of love that she is experiencing that she looks at him to see if he is feeling the same thing. But he is either acting cool or has already realized the emotion before her so it doesn't surprise him or he is yet to realize it.

"Surprise, surprise Never something I could hide When I see we made it through another day"

Later on when she looks at the time she can't believe a whole day has passed! Where did all that time go? They have just been in bed with each other all day, making love, snuggling, feeling high on their love for each other...and a whole day has passed without either of them realizing it!

"Then I say, oh, oh, oh, to you

And now the night Will throw its cover down on me again Oh, and if I'm right It's the only way to bring me back"

They are so blissful in their room, with each other, with their love and have probably made love a bunch of times. Then the night rolls around and they're both tired and they want to stay awake and don't want the day to end...but they're sleepy...she's realizing for herself or telling him that they should sleep so they can come back refreshed the next morning and have another day like that :)

"Oh, oh, oh, to you Oh, oh, oh, to you"

I pray that everyone gets to experience what it feels like to love someone like this :)

I interpret this song, as being rather ironic. I think it's about these two lovers dwelling in their cold, distanced and static relationship. Not even sunrises, the new opportunities could tempt any of them to move on. Maybe Norah is writing about a very old couple.

This is my favourite Norah Jones song, it's so catchy. Yes the video is kinda wierd, but it kinda reflects the meaning of the song. It's about two lovers in a world of their own, and the sunrise is the real world, calling them back. Or I could be just reading too far into it...

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
