great song, its the battle of wanting to fit in so you aren't lonely and picked on but not wanting to fit in because you don't like what the "cool" people do and how they act. I'ts just so honest, i think it is both sarcastic and serious, it would be nice not to be picked on but at what cost, if you have to be a dickhead in order to be picked on is it really worth it? it's a battle all people with progressive ideals battle with, there is always times where you just think "fuck it" i give up, it gets hard always being in a fight, but other times you love the fight because you are standing up for something you believe in

I dunno if I interprate it accourantly.
"Isolated my whole life Counting scars in the land of the smiling knives" I think it means that everyone is happy to hurt him and to ignore his pain, while it is the only thing he can think about.
It's serious. He doesn't fit in, and is saying "it must be cool to belong." Kick ass song.

I disagree with the smiling knives comment, i think it's talking about he was so lonely... and the knives were "smiling" like inviting, thus he started cutting himself.
The smiling knives are the people who are "cool" and the scars are the insults Milo and the gang feel. This song does rock. The first thing I thought of were self-righteous born agains who are so nice and happy but really they are hypocrates cutting other people to conform to their lives.

This is one of my favorite Descendents songs! It sounds awesome and has a very true meaning for me and many others out there! This album i find is just a great one! Cool To Be You, Merica, Mass Nerder, Dreams, Anchor Grill, and even the very funn song blast off i find are some of the greatest!
