Holy Roman Lyrics

Road map is a bitter pill
Scene stinks of a double deal
A good front like the devil will
Your eyes on the prize
Come clean like you said you would
Make peace like i know you could
Hero's don't do any good
With tears in their eyes

Fight the good fight
Maintain the trend
Just look me in the eyes and say
The world's not gonna end

Get stuck in your master plan
Place bets on an empty hand
Empire has a leg to stand
Holy roman style
A poison from a holy grail
Blind faith doesn't make a sale
Land mind on a righeous trail
March rank and file

Unpatriotic
Friend stabbing friend
You'll look me in the eyes
And say the worlds not gonna end
Just look me in the eyes
And say the worlds not gonna end

Will you save us?
Will you save us?

My favorite song off the new album. Nice catchy melody and good singing. I'm not quite sure what the true meaning of this song is but to me, it's about someone who's there for everyone but nobody seems to be there for that person in return. People only go to that person when they're down and they're right back out the door when the problem is solved.

from interviews I've read, it seems that this is a political song about the government.

First of all, I'm glad this site is back up. Second of all, this is my favorite song off the new CD. Not too sure what the meaning is, but the song is amazing.

Land mind on a righeous trail -- im sure thats "Land mines on a righeous trail "

otherwise, its very politcal i think with the "Place bets on an empty hand" lyrics...

This whole album seems to be subtly lashing out at the government. I htink the meaning of this song is that comparing our country to rome. They may see us as imperialistic?? I don't agree with them but thats the meaning i saw in it

maybe its about feeling that all the wars that you start are justified, because you are religious, or you feel you are doing the right thing. (like the romans)

I think this song is very definetely a political attack. The line "Fight the good fight, Maintain the trend" seems to be sarcastic to me. Especially comparing the United States empire to the Roman Empire, I'm guessing is a statement that we're using any means neccesary to essentially take over the world. Also, it's not "Unpatriotic, friend stabbing friend" it's "Patriotic friend stabbing friend" (Note the missing "un" and the lack of comma.) Which I think it's saying we're using patriotism as an excuse to pretty much lash out at the world.

Yeah.

History lesson pertinent to the song- Holy Roman refers to the HOLY Roman Empire, not the regular old Roman Empire. The HRE was more Germanic, Charlemagne was the emperor at one point, ring a bell yet? The empire was attacked from the outside and fell apart, but had a stronghold in... some town, I don't remember which, but I guess that's the "leg to stand." What would the US's current leg to stand be?

If you study the romans, we are surprisingly similair in many aspects of our customs and civilization, I'm not going to give a history lesson, but I was startled to learn how we are repeating history (not just our government, but everything we do as a people, its all been done and a lot was done by the romans)

"take stock in a (the) master plan" is what I heard, and it makes more sense, "get stuck" has a more accusatory tone than the rest of the song. I think the land mine analogy is a great one, a reference to vietnam/ww2 i think

laslty, although the political overtones are obvious, I think matt is still making refernce to friendships/relationships gone wrong, as many of the lines could mean both: Friend stabbing friend Come clean like you said you would Make peace like i know you could maybe thats just me
