In So Many Ways Lyrics
I can see the shadows on the wall
Drifting as the leaves start to fall
Unfazed by rugosity, the objects yield to gravity
And depict the destiny of us all
No one really knows why we die
No one gets a break so we try
Ignoring mortality, we worship mediocrity
And wait to see what happens up on high
In so many ways we live to follow the sun
In so many ways we exalt and fail as one
In so many ways we want so bad to be done
In so many ways we show our pain in unison
Something in you is busy counting the days
Catapulting you trough the haze
Blind to virtuosity, ignorant of your sanctity,
Revealing you, in so many ways
In so many ways we live to follow the sun
In so many ways we exalt and fail as one
In so many ways we want so bad to be done
In so many ways we show our pain in unison
Drifting as the leaves start to fall
Unfazed by rugosity, the objects yield to gravity
And depict the destiny of us all
No one really knows why we die
No one gets a break so we try
Ignoring mortality, we worship mediocrity
And wait to see what happens up on high
In so many ways we live to follow the sun
In so many ways we exalt and fail as one
In so many ways we want so bad to be done
In so many ways we show our pain in unison
Something in you is busy counting the days
Catapulting you trough the haze
Blind to virtuosity, ignorant of your sanctity,
Revealing you, in so many ways
In so many ways we live to follow the sun
In so many ways we exalt and fail as one
In so many ways we want so bad to be done
In so many ways we show our pain in unison

I think this is less about what we do wrong but of the way we hurt. We forget to see the good in life and push for death and the possibility of an afterlife. It's a really sad song.
I agree with all of those above so I won't go into detail with the meaning of the song, just to say that it may be one of the most underrated BR songs in their large encyclopedia going back decades. The vocal harmonies throughout, combined with the lyrics have really just always blown me away. It's a shame so many people never give, "No Substance," a chance since Mr. Brett was not a part of it.
No Substance is one of my top three BR albums and this song is the ultimate conclusion. Amazing lyrics and "oozin' ahhs". People really need to take a 2nd look at this album.

This song is about how there are so many ways we are all going wrong and being stupid.
We all live miserable meaningless lives looking forward to finding out what's on the other side, i.e. afterlife or heaven or whatever, and we need to take time to live in the moment and enjoy life. Rather than just waiting and almost wishing to die, make something out of your life.

I think it's about us all being human. We all suffer in so many ways as human beings do. I especially like the lines:
In so many ways we exalt and fail as one In so many ways we want so bad to be done In so many ways we show our pain in unison
Because it says that we all try to become something (like a doctor or a teacher or whatever) and we all fail sometimes. And we do it all in unison, because we are all the same, in well.. so many ways.
I think this song is very philosophic. The first line refers to Socrates "Allegory of the Cave" (written down by Plato.) "I can see the shadows on the wall" refers to the people in the metaphor who have been chained and facing a wall their entire lives, their only glimpse of other things the shadows on the wall of other peoples movements. Therefore Greg puts himself in the position of one of these people, which indicates his philosophic belief that we know very little about the true reality of our situation. He then goes on the...
He then goes on the say "No one really knows why we die" which is one of the basic premises of the song. In consequence of our complete lack of true understandings, we ignore our ignorance and worship mediocrity and create fantasatic stories to explain our origin. We ignore the fact that our very existence makes us sacred, and that we have great skill (virtuosity.) In so many ways we live to follow the sun, we are ephemeral beings who are compelled to action by external stimuli and who do not reach our true potential.
